Enough is enough with reality dating shows

Posted By on Fri, Apr 3, 2009 at 10:36 AM

Have you ever been on MTV or performed in a concert? Still single? That's it — I'm now guessing those are the only qualifications to get a dating "reality" show on VH1 or MTV.

Flavor Flav, Brett Michaels, Ray J and whoever else might make an interesting TV character is given a show on VH1 to help them find true love. And how well does it work? It doesn't. Flavor Flav did, what, three seasons? Michaels is on his third and Ray J's just gettin' warmed up.

Which reminds me, who the hell is Ray J, anyway? He's Brandy's brother and he was in a sex tape with Kim Kardashian. Does that make him famous? No, it puts him in a category with Paris Hilton, Kardashian and Nicole Richie who are famous for nothing. Sure Ray J put an album out, but so did Hilton - what's your point?

Anyway, the latest singer to try and get a show is Pepa of Salt N Pepa.

Seriously - enough is enough. What happened to the days when VH1 and MTV actually playing music videos? I weep for the future.

Oh, and if you're a couple — you shouldn't have a show either. The divorce rate on those is staggering — Dave Navarro and Carmen Electra, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey, the list goes on...

Music Menu (4/3/09)

Posted By on Fri, Apr 3, 2009 at 8:00 AM

Rocco DeLuca The indie-rocker made waves with his first single, "Colorful," back in 2006. He's currently touring in support of his latest CD, Mercy. While he may get lost in the shuffle in a pile of singer-songwriters, his use of the dobro makes him stand out from the pack. It gives his music a down-and-dirty appeal. Amos' Southend

The Hymns I just wrote about these Harrisburg alums, but nothing I saw or heard that night is gonna dissuade me from reminding anyone within eyeshot to get off the couch and go see 'em. Unless of course you're averse to classic melodies – folks were buzzin' about the VU, Kinks and Byrds vibes last time – updated and delivered with an all-out rock & roll party assault. Menu colleague Timothy "C the Hymns" Davis recently caught 'em in Nashville, and has given me permission to speak for him as well when I say: "great band, great tunes, ridiculous fun." Plus, they're playing with The Whigs and the Sammies – if you need reasons beyond that they're clearly not music-related. Visulite Theatre (John Schacht)

erika-blatnik.webp
Erika Blatnik Often categorized – mistakenly, I believe – as a freak-folk-type artist, young Blatnik's hi-ho speedy delivery as a solo artist seems to owe a little bit more to the Ani DiFrancos of the wor(l)d. There's a lot packed into each song, to be sure. And she's certainly got the pipes to pull it off most of the time. One wonders, however, if a little more breathing room (both for her and her audience) might be in order. Consider a band like Tegan & Sara, an act who, once they slowed their roll a bit, found both more fertile artistic ground and the wider audience that those expanded horizons can bring. Regardless, she's quite talented as is, and remains one to watch. As in, right now. With Ben Henry, Robbie Owen Hale; Pete and J, Jimmy Brown, Ashlee Hardee. The Evening Muse (Timothy C. Davis)

The Farewell Drifters This Nashville, Tenn., quintet's last'n, Sweet Summer Breeze, was one of the more pleasant bluegrass discs I sonically supped all year. Featuring 12 originals and two covers (an excellent take on Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons' "Wheels"), the boys fall somewhere in the middle between acts like Chatham County Line and The Avett Brothers. There's definitely a traditional bluegrass element, thanks to the stringband songwriting of guitarist Zach Bevill and mandolinist Joshua Britt. However, there's an undefinable looseness here too, something akin to what Townes Van Zandt was onto when he penned "Blue Ridge Mountains." Regardless of your allegiances, well worth your time for traditional music fans who don't see why you can't love both Son Volt and Son House equally. The Sylvia Theater, York (Davis)

New amphitheatre to open on June 13

Posted By on Wed, Apr 1, 2009 at 4:57 PM

The "Uptown Amphitheatre at the NC Music Factory" will open on June 13 with a concert by The Fray, which had originally been scheduled for Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.

Opening acts are Jack's Mannequin and Richard Swift. Tickets go on sale on April 3 at 10 a.m. Any tickets already purchased for the Verizon show will be valid for the Uptown Amphitheatre show.

The Uptown Amphitheatre is situated in an outdoor setting with views of the Charlotte skyline, elevated lawn seating, traditional outdoor seating, premium box seats with food and beverage service and an indoor VIP area with private restrooms, private bar and views of the stage. The concession area has a “bourbon street” feel with multiple permanent restrooms with pedestal sinks, full length mirrors and private stalls.

Live Nation plans to book 25 shows a year at the 5,000-seat venue.

The 2,000-capacity indoor venue, The Fillmore Charlotte, is also scheduled to open in June. No shows have been scheduled, but Live Nation says they will host roughly 80 per year there.

Both venues will be operated and booked by The Ark Group.

NIN's "new album"

Posted By on Wed, Apr 1, 2009 at 3:08 PM

Nine Inch Nails put up a post today (April Fool's Day) saying that the band's new album was available for download.

The disc, Strobe Light, is said to be produced by Timbaland (another dig at Chris Cornell?)

The track listing is also humorous:

1. intro skit

2. everybody's doing it (featuring chris martin, jay-z AND bono)

3. black t-shirt

4. pussygrinder (featuring sheryl crow)

5. coffin on the dancefloor

6. this rhythm is infected

7. slide to the dark side

8. even closer (featuring justin timberlake and maynard james keenan)

9. on the list (she's not)

10. clap trap crack slap

11. laid, paid and played (featuring fergie of the black eyed peas and al jourgensen)

12. feel like being dead again

13. still hurts (featuring alicia keys)

14. outro skit

It asks for your email, and when you type one in, you get an "April Fool's" error message.

Very clever, Trent. Now - get on to some serious collaborations with Maynard and Al, please!
