Saying goodbye to Teddy Pendergrass

Soul music legend Teddy Pendergrass passed away this week at age 59 leaving behind a great musical legacy. In honor of Teddy P (and no, not the T-Pain, version) here's some of my favorite tracks from the South-Carolina born, Philly-bred star, whose deep voice and sexy ballads surely led to some of my classmates' existence.

Teddy Pendgrass - "Close The Door (Live in  1979)" - It was his first Grammy nomination and easily the song I think of when I think Teddy P. Straight-forward sexuality and a rule I wish everyone followed. If you're going to give her what she's been waiting for man, close the door.

Teddy Pendergrass - Love TKO (Live on Soul Train in 1980) - This was an essential breakup song. How many women (and men) have had to tell themselves to just "let it go" with this playing in the background? Musical therapy for sure, and by watching this video, you can tell this came from the heart. If HD was around, I swear you would have seen a tear.

Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes - "If You Don't Know Me By Now (Live on Soul Train 1972)" - Not only is this what I imagined the West Charlotte prom looked like in 1972 but it's also the country's first taste of Teddy Pendergrass signature voice.

Teddy Pendergrass - "Turn Off The Lights" - In the words of Cedric The Entertainer, when Teddy said "turn em off!" you turned the damn lights off. Pure sexual innuendo, put pretty upfront getting rubbed down, sharing your  "special treat" because she's been so sweet, all are still very very valid. A love song and a LOVE song all built into one. Be careful with the candles though people.
