Behind the scenes with The Whigs

Posted By on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 4:55 PM

Saw this video and thought I'd share... the video, directed by Austin Harkey, shows some of the behind the scenes footage from the recording of the band's new album, In the Dark, especially the first track, "Hundred/Million." (I reviewed the album last month.

Live review: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony

Amos' Southend

April 10, 2010

The Deal: Arguably legendary rap quintet graces the stage minus Flesh-N-Bone (who was picked up on a felony warrant two weeks ago), but nonetheless efficient.

The Good: The audience was nuts! Seriously one of the loudest, most excited crowds I've ever seen at Amos' (that's Nas, Mos Def, Talib & Goodie Mob included). From start to finish, other than brief lull for one of their "younger cats" to do a song or two, Bone had an extremely engaged audience that rocked with them the entire time. It was crazy to see a rap audience especially that didn't have to be sold over.

BTNH knows they have a catalog of hits and was smart to spread those out over the duration of the set, but to see the crowd's positive response to their new material, you knew that the people there were mostly diehard fans, not casual listeners. If Bizzy Bone wanted to dive off the stage and crowd surf, he would've been caught and supported with ease.

Cypress Hill "Armada Latina"

Posted By on Mon, Apr 12, 2010 at 3:24 PM

I gotta admit, this song is kinda catchy... but I can't decide if it's because of Cypress Hill, Pitbull and Marc Antony or because it's a riff from Crosby, Still and Nash — Stills is in the video, too.

Another song on the album features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine:

Live review: Cash Bash VII

Cash Bash VII w/ Truckstop Preachers, Jem Crossland & The Hypertonics, The Defilers, South 85, The Go-Devils

Puckett's Farm Equipment

Each year, for the last seven, at Puckett's Farm Equipment, the annual Cash Bash has been held and unless you've been there, it's sometimes difficult to describe.

If you have been, then you know what to expect — each night a handful of bands perform roughly 35-minute sets that include at least two Johnny Cash cover songs.

Puckett's, with the Nascar memorabilia on the walls, PBR flowing from behind the bar and sold out crowd soaking in every minute is the perfect place for the event. In fact, it's better off with two sold-out nights instead of moving it someplace larger, losing out on the atmosphere and character of the place.

It's put together each year by the infamous Badger, and he does a helluva job mixing up the lineup, while keeping the entire theme consistent. From the first notes that ring out until the final drips of beer go down the throat, Cash Bash is definitely one of those "you have to be there" events, and this year was no different.

Plenty of choices on Saturday night (04/10/2010)

Posted By on Sat, Apr 10, 2010 at 9:49 AM

Lizz Wright In the old days, pre-Auto-tune era, a singer like Lizz Wright wouldn't have to be categorized as a jazz-slash-gospel-R&B singer. She'd just be called a singer, same as Aretha or Patti LaBelle or Nina Simone. Already a force on the jazz charts only seven years removed from her debut offering (Salt), Wright's latest, The Orchard, is a suitably lush, fecund soundscape dominated by Wright's own compositions and a few well-placed covers (Ike and Tina, Patsy Cline). There's nothing strange about the fruit on these trees: Wright's evocative take on growing up in Georgia might not be idyllic, but it's elegiac all the same, which isn't an easy feat. Don Gibson Theatre, Shelby (Timothy C. Davis)

Radio Moscow Imagine surfing radio stations in 1971, there's Hendrix, MC5, Cream, Doors, Radio Moscow. Say what? These psychedelia-crazed acid rockers drape their Brit blues and hard rock influences all over the guitars, no apologies. The slow, hard-strummed strings expand with wah wah pedals, fuzzbox and other vintage hardware and amps of the era while rolling drums and thick bass completes the vibe. No worries if you don't dig this classic genre, but if you do, time travel to the late '60s is in the offing. Hallucinogens optional. With Naam and Husky. Tremont Music Hall (Samir Shukla)

Hellblinki At any moment expect Vincent Price to appear in a fog of organs and late night carnival music. Hellblinki are circus musicians, street-side revivalists, tin shack blues band, old-time horror movie sound track, sirens wailing on stormy seas and swing and antique jazz all rolled up into one. And then some. Bizarrely intriguing, in a Tom Waits, Louis Armstrong sphere, with a barrel full of sounds and sights that are all over the musical map. With the Wiggle Wagons. Snug Harbor (Shukla)

Yarn Blake Christiana, front man and songwriter for Brooklyn-based alt.Country band Yarn, croons and yodels as if born and bred in Dixie. The N.Y. native has evolved into such authenticity over the past few years and recordings, that he might as well have been birthed on a bar table in a rickety Southern honky-tonk. Yarn's upcoming new recording, Come On In, is salty Americana stacked with deft songcraft and twangy playing that'll keep diehard honky-tonkers soaked while reeling in casual observers. Also on the bill are the Trainwreks. Double Door Inn (Shukla)

The Farewell Drifters Retaking Nashville from the clutches of pop country, the bluegrass and acoustic roots quintet the Farewell Drifters write lilting numbers like "Please Dream of Me Tonight," and of sunny days in the South, sitting on a riverbank, tossing rocks in the water, in sweetly melodic tracks like "The River Song." Adept at originals as well as playing ripping versions of faves like the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride," the band's new disc Yellow Tag Mondays is slated for release in early June. With the Honeycutters. The Evening Muse (Shukla)

May 6 — The Victor James Band

May 13 — Heywire

May 20 — The Masonboro Boys

May 27 — Lefty Williams Band

June 3 — Toneblazers

June 10 — Ten Toes Up

June 17 — Soul Watt

June 24 — Hot Politics

July 1 — Thom Crumpton Trio

July 8 — Rock Highway

July 15 — Loose Lugnuts

July 22 — Jubal Kane

Local Leak: The Otherside & Haz Solo's Laundry Day EP

Posted By on Fri, Apr 9, 2010 at 12:09 PM

The formation of The Otherside is a story only possible in the digital-music era.

How else would guys on opposite sides of the country, who didn't go to college together, had never met or crossed paths, get together to create music that sounded like they had been in the same room collaborating for years? Thank the Internet.

Sauce Fonda, a Charlotte native and the group's featured producer, found Keno online and, after hearing just four songs on his MySpace page, decided to hit him up to collaborate. A point he downplays as, "being bored."

Whatever the circumstances, the Sacramento, Calif., based MC obliged and the two have been working as a group since 2007.

theOTHERSIDE & Haz Solo - Hold It Down <— Click to listen.

"Hold It Down" is the group's favorite song from their new EP, Laundry Day, which dropped on Monday. It features cuts from DJ Jun and rapper Haz Solo adding some Midwest (Milwaukee to be exact) flavor to the Carolina-Cali connection. This sample and horn heavy track has some Cool Kid-y lyrics and a classic, upbeat hip-hop feel which producer, Sauce Fonda, says is different from his normal, laid back, soul sample-driven tracks.

"I was going for some real hype shit," said Sauce Fonda. "I heard the sample [and] chopped it up like it was nothing, sent it to Keno and he went nuts."

You can download the Laundry Day EP here. To hear more of The Otherside's previous projects, visit http://theotherside.bandcamp.com/

The group says they'll make some decisions about moving forward with an album based on the popularity and response to this EP.
