Philly Opera Company entertains market

Posted By on Mon, Jul 26, 2010 at 1:10 PM

Another cool idea using surprise to gain an audience's attention and bring more interest in a not-so-popular form of music...

In April, more than 30 members of the Opera Company of Philadelphia teamed up with the Reading Terminal Market as they sang "Brindisi" in the aisles, entertaining hundreds of shoppers.

Bravo!

Live review: Deer Tick

Deer Tick w/ Dead Confederate

Visulite Theatre

July 25, 2010

The Deal: Deer Tick returns to Charlotte with Dead Confederate in tow.

DeadConfed

The Good: Dead Confederate hit the stage first for a roughly 40-minute set full of loud rock with a Southern edge. The quintet featured two guitars, bass, drums and a keyboardist for something a bit more grungy and indie about it's approach. The loud volume offered a kind of wall of noise leaving the stage with lyrics and occasional keyboard notes hitting the high spots amongst the din.

Live review: Cowboy Junkies

Cowboy Junkies

McGlohon Theatre

July 21, 2010

The Deal: It was Toronto, Canada’s own soulful and bluesy rock band Cowboy Junkies at McGlohon Theatre all by their lonesome. They are touring in support of their new release, Renmin Park, one of four albums they have produced in 18 months called the Nomad Series.

The Good: McGlohon Theatre’s 730-seat setup is very intimate and breathtaking — especially the stained-glass windows and the Byzantine dome from the previous First Baptist Church that was once located there. Its interior shape also made way for some great acoustics.

I had always loved lead vocalist Margo Timmin’s voice ever since I first heard her sing their version of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane” off of The Trinity Session album in 1988, and I figured I was in for a treat. I was.

Dead Confederate tonight (July 25)

Posted By on Sun, Jul 25, 2010 at 8:45 AM

Dead Confederate Athens, Ga.-based quintet's nouveau psychedelic rock unfolds as the songs rise from floating keyboards where the guitars seem to slice into the mix with razor-like precision. Subtle bass runs or drones expand into voluminously realized, dual guitars-built songs. Their new recording, Sugar, is slated for release in late August. With Deer Tick. $12, Visulite Theatre, www.visulite.com

Carnival of Madness Tour tonight (July 24)

Posted By on Sat, Jul 24, 2010 at 8:45 AM

The Have Nots What starts off sounding like a Rancid wannabe band rewards the listener with ska-punk that's hummable, danceable, and stage diveable. The Boston blokes are gathered from a couple of popular but now defunct bands that toss ska, reggae and punk rock in and around challenging lyrics that gel into, well, good time music. With Biggy Stardust and His Wretched Hive and Bracing for Impact. $6-$8, The Milestone, www.themilestoneclub.com (Samir Shukla)

Carnival of Madness Tour f/ Shinedown, Chevelle, Puddle of Mudd, Sevendust, 10 Years It's a carnival! Of madness! Shit's gonna get crazy, bro! I got that Joose on ice! If middling, oppressively iron-headed post-grunge dirge-osity is yer thing – and I don't mean like good, Melvins-esque dirge – then you'll be happy as a pig in shit here. Like the kind you might find in a little petting zoo. Right across from the funnel cake stand. Catty-corner to the whack-a-mole ... at the carnival... of madness! $20-$42.50, Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, www.livenation.com (Timothy C. Davis)

Josh Eagle and the Harvest City This Cincinnati folk rock, soul quartet travels to Plaza Midwood for the last of their N.C. stretch of shows with a sound about as fitting of the area as any. Genuine lyrics about home, life and traveling, coupled with crisp but not overly rehearsed or mechanical musicianship, create a wonderful aesthetic. Watching all those guys fit on that tiny stage should be interesting as well. Free, Common Market, www.commonmarketisgood.com (Mike McCray)

CD Review: Curren$y's Pilot Talk

Posted By on Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 4:54 PM

pilottalk

The Deal: New Orleans MC sees bigger audience and wider distribution on his third studio album, sure to be every D.A.R.E. instructors nightmare and every stoner's dream.

The Good: There's something fascinating and dope about Curren$y's baked train of thought, whether it's obscure sports references or video game and classic TV nostalgia. The beats, primarily crafted by North Carolina super-producer Ski Beatz — probably most famous for producing "Dead Presidents" on Jay-Z'sReasonable Doubt — range from experimental and grimy early on to, at times, easy listening and adult contemporary later without sacrificing soul or precision. After the first few tracks go in different directions the album settles into a dope and consistent groove.

Love guest appearances. Newcomers like Big K.R.I.T. and Smoke DZA contribute dope verses to "Skybourne" while vets Mikey Rocks of The Cool Kids ("The Hangover"), Mos Def & Jay Electronica ("The Day") and Devin The Dude ("Chilled Coughphee") rode down tempo beats like a clean whip on Saturday afternoon. Can't forget Nesby Phips either who did his thing over a beat he produced ("Prioritize")

The Bad: Fans will recognize more than a few of these tracks from previous projects (mixtapes and leaks) with is probably frustrating for fans clamoring for new material. "Seat Change" with Snoop Dogg is one of those features you were excited to hear, but then, after hearing it, you'll say you want the "old Snoop" back.

The Verdict: Smooth and easy to re-play over and over. Truly one of hip hop's most unique and underrated voices delivers an album that should catch the ears of fans who only associated him with "Where The Cash At?" and push his already loaded underground bandwagon towards capacity. Hopefully, it's enough green to go around.

ICP's Gathering of the Juggalos promo video

Posted By on Fri, Jul 23, 2010 at 2:18 PM

I just found this online, it's a promotional video for the 11th Annual Gathering of the Juggalos that will take place in Illinois in August of 2010. I know there are rabid fans of Insane Clown Posse, but as I watched the video, I couldn't help but think of the Saturday Night Live skit about the Underground Festival featuring Ass Dan.

Maybe it was the bad acting, or all of the artists wearing clown makeup... Either way, I just couldn't take it seriously.

Here's the SNL skit:

Now check out the ICP promotional video:
