Guttermouth tonight (August 6)

Posted By on Fri, Aug 6, 2010 at 8:29 AM

GUTTERMOUTH Corky lyrics and good-time punk rock are the hallmarks of Southern Cali maniacs Guttermouth. Now marking a decade of touring and recording, the boys happily maintain their spastic punk shenanigans and itchy guitars with a sunny, tongue-in-cheek, we-don't-take-ourselves-too-seriously persona. It's a Friday night — put on your dancing shoes and get your ass out there. With the New Threat, Southside Punx, and The Not Likelys. $13-$15, The Milestone, www.themilestoneclub.com

Lollapalooza in Chicago this weekend

Posted By on Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 10:52 AM

I'm heading up to the Windy City to cover Lollapalooza 2010 in Chicago this weekend. The three-day festival is now in a single location, for all-day music.

Having been to Bonnaroo for the last four years and checking out Voodoo Fest last year in New Orleans, I'm curious to see how Lollapalooza stacks up. I remember going to Lolla the first few years back in the early '90s when it was headlined by Jane's Addiction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Alice in Chains.

This year, the headliners are Lady Gaga, Green Day and a reunited Soundgarden. It should be interesting, to say the least.

Much like the coverage at those other festivals, I'll be posting daily blogs here and sending out Twitter messages to let you know what's going on.

As for the bands I'm hoping to check out — here's a few:

Peter Case tonight (August 5)

Posted By on Thu, Aug 5, 2010 at 8:29 AM

PETER CASE Hugely underappreciated over his nearly four-decade career, songcraft specialist, singer and guitarist Case writes songs that will remain potent decades from now. No need to go into his history, checkmark of his early bands the Nerves and the Plimsouls, as Case strokes the guitar with his signature finger-picking style while meshing blues, folk and rock. There's nada a weak track on his newest recording, Wig!. With Mary Gauthier. $18, The Evening Muse, www.theeveningmuse.com

Black Crowes share some history

Posted By on Wed, Aug 4, 2010 at 4:21 PM

In celebration of the band's latest album, Croweology, and 20 years of making music, the band is releasing daily YouTube videos offering looks at their past for the next 20 days.

The first episode is about the band's tour with Aerosmith:

Future topics include:

· What really drives the relationship between CHRIS and his brother, guitarist RICH ROBINSON?

· How did the union of THE BLACK CROWES and Oasis on the “Tour of Brotherly Love” actually cancel out the feuds of both bands’ brothers?

· What about the band’s recently announced lengthy hiatus that will begin when their upcoming “SAY GOODNIGHT TO THE BAD GUYS 2010” tour ends this year with an epic six-night stand in San Francisco at The Fillmore December 12-19?

Black Cobra, R&B Live tonight (August 4)

Posted By on Wed, Aug 4, 2010 at 8:29 AM

BLACK COBRA San Francisco dirge and doom rockers make a hell of a racket for a duo. The thickly rolling guitars and pounding drums slither along while effects and howled vocals load up on the bombast. Black Cobra tosses in psychedelic and spacey effects while taking Black Sabbath on a joyride. Also on the bill are Howl, Struck by Lightning and Machete! $10-$15, Tremont Music Hall, www.tremontmusichall.com (Samir Shukla)

R&B LIVE If there's one thing Charlotte has managed to produce consistently, it's singers. The return of this weekly open mic event gives you the chance to see what the city has to offer in the soul department and maybe even be the first to hear a diamond in the rough perform with a live band. $10, Sunset Club, www.sunsetclubcharlotte.com (Mike McCray)
