Live review: The Smoker's Club Tour

The Smoker's Club Tour

Curren$y w/ Big K.R.I.T & Smoke DZA

Amos' Southend

October 27, 2010

The Deal: Charlotte gets their first glimpse of hip hop's next big thing, Big K.R.I.T, and catches a contact high from Curren$y and Smoke DZA along the way.

The Good: The crew from Black Flag Records was the local opener and Dow Jones, A. Moss and Deniro Farrar put together their most complete and fluid set I've ever seen. It's like everything is coming together for them and their road work is starting to pay off with much better sets.

Smoke DZA came out with a half smoked blunt behind his ear and got into material from his "George Kush Da Button" mixtape.

Big K.R.I.T. -- Wow! His performance was passionate, intense, high-energy and best of all, dope. He ripped through material from his hit, K.R.I.T Wuz Here, and even some newer tracks sure to be on the upcoming Return of 4eva. Fans really responded to the powerful, self-produced jams. Easily the night's best performance, seeing "Hometown Hero" and "Children of the World" live were special but seeing him spit "Country Shit" over fellow Mississippi flag waver, David Banner's "Like A Pimp" then jump in the crowd to finish the song was crazy. Big Sant joined him on stage and was instantly a crowd favorite, despite the fact he was the spitting of Little Brother's Big Pooh.

I think it's safe to say Curren$y was high as shit! Thankfully the show wasn't hurt at all. He came out on stage and went through tons of material, spitting lyrics as crisply as the records they were on. Even challenging the audience to go bar for bar with him on his verses without the music. What was funnier was his random insights ("it hot as shit up here" + urging the crowd to "maintain their high" since smoking was unheard of) or his impressions of DJ Don Cannon.

The crowd wasn't nearly as large as it was for Curren$y cohort Wiz Khalifa but the few hundred on hand were as engaged as any you'll get in Charlotte, proving it sometimes better to have a few hundred diehards rather than a thousand people just coming to be seen.

The Bad: North Carolina's indoor smoking ban didn't seem to sit well with the performers. It was constantly brought up, although I doubt blazing trees indoors was ever legal.

Don't know how many people in the audience were old enough to remember Fiend, of No Limit fame when No Limit was -- No Limit, but I'm guessing it was less than 10.

Nobody complained but the missing songs were glaring. Tracks like "No Wheaties," "Etc., Etc.," and "The Secret" featured all three performing acts but weren't part of the setlist. Slightly disappointing.

The Verdict: Solid show. The local openers outshined the openers on tour, Smoke DZA was about what you'd expect. Curren$y was awesome but K.R.I.T was special. That's the only way to describe it.

El and back: DeBarge performs in the Q.C. Friday, Oct. 29

Posted By on Thu, Oct 28, 2010 at 10:25 AM

If, like me, you’ve grown tired of hearing DJs spin the Notorious B.I.G.’s hip-hop hit “One More Chance,” you should check out the man who provided the musical foundation for this and other tunes: El DeBarge.

Over the years, rappers like Biggie and Rich Boy (of “Throw Some D’s” fame ... see video below) have sampled classic songs by El and the DeBarge family. But, as he battled drug addiction, the legendary vocalist pretty much disappeared from the spotlight. (In a recent interview, El told me: “It took me 22 years to get hooked on drugs and 25 years to get off.”)

Now, however, he’s back with a brand-new album (Second Chance), and a smooth new sound (According to El, Polow Da Don, the producer of “Throw Some D’s” that features a snippet from the beloved track “I Call Your Name” — by the first DeBarge family group, Switch — recently created some tracks for his new album. While in the studio El said to Polow: “I like what you did for Rich Boy. Now let’s see what you can do for me!”), which you can hear live when he makes a stop in Charlotte tonight to perform new, and vintage, material.

$35-$65. 7:30 p.m. CPCC’s Halton Theater, 1206 Elizabeth Ave. For more information, visit www.thesolkitchen.com.

Plant and Animals, Anoop Desai, The Smokers Club Tour, Andy the Doorbum tonight (Oct. 27)

Posted By on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 12:28 PM

PLANTS AND ANIMALS Montreal-based collective Plants and Animals, like many of its Canuck compatriots, prefer loose song structures, foot-stomp choir crescendo, and soaring, anthemic takes on what it takes to come — and stay — alive in tough times. But whereas an Arcade Fire might aim for a broader sweep with its writing world view, Plants and Animals most often stays within its own particular phylum (and/or species): broad, lush rock about love and loss and regret and all those other interminable facts of life. The fact they can make a simple song about heartbreak sound like the end of the world says something about them, and about us too. But most importantly, it says something about the heart, and is therefore universal. With Frightened Rabbit, The Phantom Band. $15, Neighborhood Theatre, www.neighborhoodtheatre.com (Timothy C. Davis)

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

ANOOP DESAI Desai is a crooner with a sweet, soul-infused, old-school R&B voice, that when dipped in pop and rhythms of his Indian heritage creates brightly lit pop songs. Yeah, he was a finalist on the eighth season of American Idol, but Desai has already matured beyond the confines of that clique, and his music and writing skills are in full display on his debut recording All is Fair earlier this year. Grand things await this Chapel Hill native. With Sallie Mosely and Isaac Russell. $10, The Evening Muse, www.theeveningmuse.com (Shukla)

THE SMOKER'S CLUB TOUR If you don't know the name Big K.R.I.T. by now, you've been missing out on one of hip-hop's newest, most unique talents. 2010 has been a whirlwind for the Meridian, Miss., rapper/producer, who went from relative unknown before releasing K.R.I.T Wuz Here, to Def Jam signee and rap blog household name, in just a few months. He joins forces with frequent collaborators, Curren$y, who's had a standout year himself, releasing Pilot Talk (produced entirely by N.C.-born, legendary hip-hop hit maker, Ski Beatz) and flooding the Internet with visuals, and Smoke DZA, for a show I'd gladly put my name behind. $20, Amos' Southend, www.amossouthend.com (Mike McCray)

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

ANDY THE DOORBUM You may think you know what you're in for when you see Andy the Doorbum grab an acoustic guitar and take a seat on stage as he gets set to perform, but chances are, you'll be surprised. Instead of the typical singer-songwriter stuff, Andy's work not only finds depth in its lyrical approach, but floor-shaking energy in his growled vocals and momentary fits of strumming. The only bad thing is that a lot of his releases are on cassette. Anyone got a tape player? With Little Teeth and Bob Fields. $6-$8, The Milestone, www.themilestoneclub.com (Jeff Hahne)

A chat with Bear Rinehart of Needtobreathe

Posted By on Wed, Oct 27, 2010 at 11:06 AM

The last time I spoke with Bear Rinehart, lead singer of the band Needtobreathe, he was excited that the band was finally starting to play larger venues. Its first trips to Charlotte were to venues like the Neighborhood Theatre. In April, they were able to sell out the larger Amos’.

This time around, it’s the Fillmore — Oct. 28. “It’s really insane,” says an excited Bear. “When this thing started 10 years ago, we were amazed to see the crowd go from 20 people to 50. Now, we’re selling out legit venues. It’s unbelievable.”

And larger venues isn’t the only thing that’s changed since we last saw the group in April. The band just returned from a trip to Europe to promote its highly successful, critically acclaimed album The Outsiders.

“Europe was wild,” Bear explains. “We’d never been before and had no idea what to expect. The album literally was released just a few days before we got there so we weren’t sure what type of response we’d have. It was great. Everyone knew the songs and had been listening to our old album The Heat for years. The response was amazing. We were blown away.”

Live video: Lucky Five

Posted By on Tue, Oct 26, 2010 at 1:21 PM

The members of Lucky Five combined a blend of soul, funk, and rock in front of a packed house during their CD release party at Tremont Music Hall. The album, cleverly titled La Resistance, is a celebration of liberation, coolness and individuality. Check out the video we created to see the band performing “The Queen,” one of the hottest tracks on the album, and get their personal take on how they maintain their musical chemistry.

Diet Cokeheads play Lunchbox Records tonight (Oct. 26)

Posted By on Tue, Oct 26, 2010 at 8:20 AM

DIET COKEHEADS Catchy names are always a good draw, but this group doesn't seem to be paying homage to the popular carbonated drink. One look at its blogspot, lovingly titled the "dietcrackheads," tells you this female punk band enjoys living on the edge. Their psychedelic, funk-tinged rock has a strange yet likeable appeal, and before you know it, you find yourself lulled into a trance of sorts. Slightly puzzling? Yes, but interesting enough that you'll want to hear more. With Grids and Holy Hand. $3-$5, Lunchbox Records, www.lunchboxrecords.com

Posted By on Mon, Oct 25, 2010 at 1:50 PM

Am I the only one who saw this coming? Granted, I didn't expect the video to be a shot-for-shot remake.

I present to you, Baracka Flocka Flames. God help us all.

Andrew W.K., Hardcore Lounge and The Machete Music Tour tonight (Oct. 23)

Posted By on Sat, Oct 23, 2010 at 8:20 AM

ANDREW W.K. Ryan Schreiber of Pitchfork once gave W.K.'s record "I Get Wet" a point-six, further calling the man's entire oeuvre "blistering tard-rock." A lot of things have happened since then: W.K. has become a motivational speaker (no kiddin'), he's been dropped by a satchel of record labels, and even been accused of having been a corporate construction all along. As for yours truly, I always thought of the man as something akin to a joke that seemed to be on everyone's lips but with a punchline impossible to parse. Whatever it was — and is — is probably immaterial at this point. To his credit, the "music" has decidedly not stood the test of time, which somehow seems to give the whole affair a little more humanity. Amos' Southend (Timothy C. Davis)

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

MACHETE MUSIC TOUR Many would argue the reggaeton era in music has passed but for a generation that come of age during its height, it still holds a special place for them. The biggest names in Reggaeton and Latin urban music descend on the Queen City with a roster as stacked as they come. Ivy Queen, Tego Calderon and more will grace the stage. I wish I spoke Spanish. $35-$85, Bojangles' Coliseum, www.bojanglescoliseum.com (Mike McCray)

\\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</param\>\\</embed\>\</object\>

HARDCORE LOUNGE The Johnson Brothers, Wes (vocals) and Chris (keyboards, vocals) are continuing the tradition. They're third generation performers to be precise, following the steps of the famed Johnson Family Singers. After nearly a decade of performing, Hardcore Lounge is celebrating the release of Dance of My Life. The multi-hued genre hopper can be pegged as jazz, lounge and pop, but that's only a start. . Charlotte music stalwarts Marlon Young, Marco Heeter and Mary Massie Allegrucci round out the crew. With Tara Busch and Jay Coop. $5, Snug Harbor, www.snugrock.com (Samir Shukla)
