All Time Low tonight (3/29/11)

Posted By on Tue, Mar 29, 2011 at 8:49 AM

All Time Low There’s a ton of pop-punk and emo pop bands out there, so they’ve gotta have something extra to rouse this scribe. All Time Low straddles the middle line. They’ve got a slew of hum-along numbers to be sure, but there’s not much new ground covered, either. The Baltimore combo does have just enough oomph for staying power, including enticing frontman Alex Gaskar. The band’s playful songcraft is a further boost. They tour heavily, another positive checkmark. The new album Dirty Work is slated for release in the near future. With Yellowcard, Hey Monday and the Summer Set. $32.75, The Fillmore Charlotte. www.livenation.com.

The Coheed and Cambria contest - win tickets and meet the band!

Posted By on Mon, Mar 28, 2011 at 11:09 AM

Coheed & Cambria

Ever get your words printed in Creative Loafing?

Are you a big Coheed and Cambria fan and you'd love to go their "Neverender: SSTB" concert at The Fillmore Charlotte on April 18, but you don't have tickets?

Creative Loafing is partnering up Coheed and Cambria to offer a lucky fan the chance to win tickets, a meet and greet with the band AND get your words written in the paper.

How? Instead of telling us why you like the band, we'd like you to write a preview of the show and tell CL readers why they should go. In roughly 75 words, write up a quick paragraph that gets right to the point of why people should be at this show. Don't simply say "they're awesome" or "because they're the best band ever," we're looking for more than that.

Coheed and Cambria will be playing its debut album, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, in full, as well as an acoustic set and an encore set.

The winner, chosen by the band, will have their preview item published in the music section of the April 13-20 edition of Creative Loafing, as well as online at clclt.com. Find out first by picking up a copy in the Charlotte area — and then we'll post the winner online on Friday, April 15, if you can wait that long.

Send your entries with your name, age and valid e-mail address to vielarcrom@gmail.com

Good luck!

Spread Your Wings music benefit, Eddie Spaghetti tonight (3/27/11)

Posted By on Sun, Mar 27, 2011 at 8:49 AM

Spread Your Wings music benefit Returning for the sixth time, the Spread Your Wings concert is a benefit for Wind River Cancer Wellness Retreats, a non-profit organization located in the N.C. foothills. In addition to a silent auction, the bands performing at the 3p.m.-8 p.m. event include The Old Invention, Carolina Gator Gumbo, Leadville Social Club, Evelynn Rose and The Belmont Playboys. $10. Double Door Inn. www.spreadyourwings.windriverservices.org. (Jeff Hahne)

Eddie Spaghetti Mr. Spaghetti (I wonder if telemarketers ask for him that way) is best known as the guiding light behind long-running punkabilly stage-wreckers The Supersuckers. Though his narratives — revolving almost exclusively around sex, drugs, drinking and Satan — are meant to be taken half-seriously, the music is delivered with heartfelt (if inebriated) passion. Spaghetti’s latest solo release, Sundowner, is a mostly-covers disc that tilts honky-tonk, ala The ’suckers 1997 classic, Must’ve Been High. So strap on your PBRs and revel in the debauchery. With Cattle Truck and Wiggle Wagons. $10-$12. Tremont Music Hall. www.tremontmusichall.com. (John Schacht)

The Needles, Yes tonight (3/25/11)

Posted By on Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 8:49 AM

The Needles This Wilmington band’s new recording, In the Red, is delightful for seekers of raw garage rock done right. There’s no shame in bravado of the Stooges and Ramones kind. The dual guitars have a grand time unleashing punkish rock, surely keeping the pit well-attended. They will be performing as part of Trash-O-Rama 2011. With 220 Short, Blood Red River and The Speed Kings. $10. Tremont Music Hall. www.tremontmusichall.com. (Samir Shukla)

Yes These British proggers represented the acme of rock’s most pretentious era, when musicians saw “rock” as an extension of the classical music tradition and tended to let everybody know about it: Roger Dean-illustrated concept albums, “suites” instead of songs, walls of synthesizers, billions of custom-made guitars, drumkits the size of small cities ... throw in Jon Anderson’s scrotum-pinched mewl and the Spinal Tap comparisons were inescapable. Alas, Anderson’s not in this lineup, which is causing consternation in the Yes-heads camp. But, hey, that Steve Howe can still really wail on lute! $47.20. The Fillmore Charlotte. www.livenation.com. The Funeral Pyre, The Dirty Guv'nahs tonight (3/24/11)

Posted By on Thu, Mar 24, 2011 at 8:03 AM

The Funeral Pyre A night of guttural chaos is on hand as Cali black/death metal mofos rumble through with thunderous percussion, undecipherable (of course) growling vocals, and guitars that are on a constant war footing. It’s perfect if yer looking for a bruising. They’re touring with Italian grindcore metal outfit The Secret. Young & In the Way is also on the bill. $9-$11. Milestone. www.themilestoneclub.com. (Samir Shukla)

The Dirty Guv'nahs Five years into their voyage together, this Knoxville, Tenn., band came to be under speedy and interesting circumstances and have since went on to have a two-time Grammy winner produce their album and be voted the best band Knoxville three times in a row. Drawing comparisons to The Rolling Stones and John Mellencamp, you can’t really knock these Rocky Top grads soulful blues and rock. $10. Visulite Theatre. www.visulite.com. (Mike McCray)

Live review: Moss and Liz's Wedding at the Milestone

Posted By on Tue, Mar 22, 2011 at 3:19 PM

Moss and Liz's Wedding f. Felicia Castelow, Rape Whistle, Letdowns, All Rise, Fat Camp, For Disaster, Zeus and Twenty Eyes

The Milestone

March 19, 2011

The Deal: When I found out that the rowdy Moss of DSR and his lovely lady Liz were getting hitched at the Milestone, I was utterly stoked. I knew that an incredibly sick show was bound to be booked and the celebrations would be extravagant and to remember (if you were capable of doing so). Nonetheless, the progression of schedule began and before I knew it eight bands were on the bill: Felicia Castelow, Rape Whistle, Letdowns, All Rise, Fat Camp, For Disaster, Zeus and Twenty Eyes and a wedding ceremony at 1:30 am. There was no way that I would have even considered missing such an incredible night of punk rock love and jams.
