Amanda Pollard, Graham Lindsey, Dirk Quinn Band, Kylesa tonight (5/25/11)

Posted By on Wed, May 25, 2011 at 9:25 AM

Amanda Pollard Taking the opportunity to support homegrown talent is always special and Amanda Pollard is that. The Northwest School of the Arts alum has been cutting her teeth as an R&B singer just about everywhere people will listen and those who’ve had the opportunity to see it first hand can tell you that her songs about the human experience are as unique as any. Charlotte-based rapper Deimont is also on the bill. $5. Twilight Caribbean.  www.twilightcaribbean.com. (Mike McCray)

Graham Lindsey Now living in the hills of Montana, folk and country singer/songwriter Lindsey writes tales laced with angst, barreling through primal acoustic numbers on guitar or banjo. He once floated around in punk bands, including kid punks Old Skull; Lindsey is quite at home now in a backwoods country mode and musically worthy to pull up a barstool with the likes of John Wesley Harding and even Dylan. With Stephen Warwick, Les Wright and Ben Henry. $7/$9. Milestone. themilestoneclub.com. (Samir Shukla)

Dirk Quinn Band Philly-based guitarist Quinn’s funk and jazz naturally avail to sinewy jazz as well as playful experimentation ala Medeski, Martin & Wood. Last summer’s release, QuinnTet, is a fine example of what contemporary jazz could aspire to and become, without acquiescing to noodling that becomes generic wallpaper. $7. Double Door Inn. doubledoorinn.com. (Shukla)

Kylesa Backed by the tribal ferocity of double drummers, the vertigo-inducing bombast of Kylesa channels the likes of noise weavers Neurosis, and hardens the sound further. Touring in support of recent recording Spiral Shadow, the quintet from the seaside burb of Savannah launches whirring guitars with oft shouted vocals. Also on the bill are Hour of 13, Caltrop, and Machete! $12/$14. Tremont Music Hall. tremontmusichall.com. (Shukla)

Noise ordinance passes unanimously

Posted By on Mon, May 23, 2011 at 4:16 PM

The new noise ordinance has been passed by the Charlotte City Council in a unanimous vote. The new ordinance targets repeat offenders and is based on decibel limits. It is not nearly as harsh as the original proposal brought before the committee months ago.

You can download a copy of it here.

Some of the new stipulations are:

It shall be unlawful to:

(1) Operate or allow the operation of any sound amplification equipment so as to create sounds registering 55 db(A) between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday or between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Friday or Saturday or 50 db(A) at any other time, as measured anywhere within the boundary line of the nearest residentially occupied property

(2) As to multifamily structures including apartments, condominiums, or other residential arrangements where boundary lines cannot readily be determined, operate or allow the operation of any sound amplification equipment so as to create sounds registering 55 db(A) between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday or between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Friday or Saturday or 50 db(A) between 9:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m.at any other time, as measured from any point within the interior of another residential unit in the same complex or within the boundary line of the nearest residentially occupied property

Permits for additional amplification at a property, or adjacent properties under common ownership, shall be limited to 15 hours in a calendar year. Permits issued pursuant to this section may allow additional amplification only between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Friday or Saturday.

10-in-10 CD reviews

Posted By on Fri, May 20, 2011 at 3:14 PM

Each Friday, we review 10 recently released CDs in 10 words each:

Glee The Warblers — Please, someone make them stop releasing all these horrible albums.

Ben Sollee Inclusions — Use of cello separates Sollee from majority of folk rock.

Yael Naim She Was a Boy — “New Soul” singer returns with same happy vibe as debut.

The Felice Brothers Celebration, Florida — Band teeters between carnival-like energy and standard, somber rock.

Tara Nevins Wood and Stone — Bluegrass-tinged folk has hints of Levon Helm’s spirit infused.

Birds and Arrows We’re Gonna Run — Vocals in the Chapel Hill band’s folk brand are hypnotizing.

Brother Lou The Devil in Me — Music is better than poor quality graphics on album art.

IiO Exit 110 — Possibly one of most lifeless electronica albums I’ve ever heard.

The Cars Move Like This — Who cares what decade this is, they’re bringing ‘80s back.

Shawn Pittman Edge of the World — Some classic style to his rough and ragged guitar blues.

For the first time, to my recollection, Charlotte will be hosting underground bands from all around the region including our own 25 Minutes to Go, Andy the Doorbum and Junior Astronomers; Philadelphia's Mose Giganticus, Lancaster, PA's 1994! and Atlanta's Vegan Coke and Emotron. Come experience the splendor of a variety of talent from our region and home, in our very own backyard. Support local and regional music and get your eyes and ears pleased like no other.

For more information including schedules and bands, click here.

Pick up your pass today at Common Market, Lunchbox Records or online for $25. Otherwise, you will find yourself paying covers by the venue. Trust me, you won't want to miss out!

Noise ordinance update

Posted By on Thu, May 19, 2011 at 2:55 PM

The Charlotte city council will be voting on the noise ordinance changes on Monday at 4 p.m. You can find the final proposal here.

What could have been a disaster for the local music scene with the effective ban of most outdoor live amplified music has been averted as the council is now being given an ordinance that focuses on decibel levels and repeat offenders.
