Adam "MCA" Yauch, one-third of the legendary New York rap group Beastie Boys, died at age 47 on May 4, 2012. He had been battling cancer since 2009 when a tumor was found in his salivary gland.
The band was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last month. Yauch did not attend the ceremony.
The group had not performed live since Bonnaroo in June of 2009. They last performed in Charlotte during the Get Out and Vote Tour which stopped at Amos' Southend in October of 2008.
Editor Mark Kemp will post a personal tribute to Yauch online in the coming days.
Great Architect
The Milestone
May 2, 2012
Great Architect set up in the bar room of the West Charlotte venue and offered a quiet, rattling set that soothed and enchanted the audience.
Great Architect creates their own flair within the abstract. It is baffling as to how they manage to choreograph their incredibly delicate and complex form of jazz. Each note they hit is in a series and time signature that only the other band members can truly keep track of. In fact, their set list holds a series of notations as to who is a duo and what notes lead their progressive flow so they can stay on point.
Rise Against kicked off the outdoor concert season at Time Warner Cable Uptown Amphitheatre on May 2, 2012.
On Q Productions and The Bearden Society will present Hip-Hop Unplugged: Part 1 East Coast at the Mint Museum Uptown Tuesday, May 1, at 7 p.m.
The show will present the story of hip-hop through the creative eyes of the artists it has inspired. Conceived and directed by Stacey Rose, it will feature art and music by DJ Justice, Concrete Generation, Citizens of the Universe, Ida Divine, Michelle Flowers, KinkyThought, Filmore Johnson and Carlleena Person.
Among the songs on the soundtrack of the event are Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'," Beastie Boys' "Brass Monkey," LL Cool J's "I'm Bad" and "Ms. Fat Booty" by Mos Def.
