Touring in support of his sophomore album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, Sturgill Simpson rolled his old-school brand of country into the sold-out Chop Shop on Nov. 7, 2014.

The former bluegrass band member who grew up in Kentucky gave a hint of his past with "Poor Rambler," but for the most part, the show was all country — and the crowd loved it. In addition to his own songs — "Time After All" and "Living the Dream" among them — Simpson threw in a few covers, including Lefty Frizell's "I Never Go Around Mirrors" and the Stanley Brothers' "Medicine Springs."

"Two years ago, we played for some people at the Thirsty Beaver and then last year we played for about 70 up the road at the Evening Muse," Simpson said, looking out at the packed NoDa venue. "Then, well, I don't know what the fuck happened, but thanks for being here."
