New releases (2/21/2012)

Posted By on Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 10:33 AM

Here's a quick rundown of what's new in stores this week:

Archers of Loaf Vee Vee — Settle down. It's just a reissue.

Buckethead Electric Sea — Because Buckethead has a better ring to it than Brian Carroll, and dude actually wears a bucket... wait for it... on his head.

Fun. Some Nights — It's that new Fun album. Have you heard that Fun song? Want to go to that Fun concert? The possibilities are endless...

Galactic Electric Carnivale — Latest effort is inspired by the sounds of Carnivale — appropriate for Fat Tuesday, no?

Sinead O'Connor How About I Be Me (and You Be You)? — I'm guessing there won't be songs about wedded bliss on here...

Sleigh Bells Reign of Terror — Fresh off their Saturday Night Live appearance.

This week's new releases (2/7/2012)

Posted By on Tue, Feb 7, 2012 at 11:07 AM

Here's a quick look at what's new in stores this week:

Dierks Bentley Home — Country singer still trying to find his own path in country music.

Die Antwoord Ten$ion — Has anyone figured out if we're supposed to take them seriously or not?

Dr. Dog Be the Void — Continuing to find their niche on the musical landscape.

The Fray Scars & Stories — More top 40 crap that sounds like the rest of the top 40 crap.

Mark Lanegan Band Blues Funeral — Latest offering from the former Screaming Trees singer.

Paul McCartney Kisses on the Bottom — A new album from the former Beatle or the title of a new porn film — you decide.

Of Montreal Paralytic Stalks — What happens to a band once the buzz dies down?

Sharon Van Etten Tramp — Of course her buzz builds right after she plays Charlotte...

Van Halen A Different Kind of Truth — Judging by early reviews, people were hoping for a different kind of album, too.

Jack White releases first solo single

Posted By on Mon, Jan 30, 2012 at 2:12 PM

Jack White has released the first song from his upcoming solo album, Blunderbuss, due out on April 24. You can hear "Love Interruption" on White's website here.

Most reviews so far are ho-hum, with many people on Facebook commenting that it's "boring" or "background music". To me, it sounds too much like the riffs are copied instead of offering a good taste of the creative stuff White is so known for.

The opening riff sounds a little too close to the opening chimes of Dusty Springfield's "Son of a Preacher Man."

Then you have a riff behind White's vocals in the verse that sounds too close to the rhythm of "Vehicle" by The Ides of March.

Meanwhile, the male/female singing combination reminds me of The Civil Wars, well, maybe a poor man's Civil Wars without the strength of its harmonies.

I'm curious to see how the rest of the album sounds once it's made available, but early impressions will have a lot of people clamoring for a White Stripes reunion sooner rather than later.

Former Charlotte musician releasing Los Amigos Invisibles documentary in March

Juan Miguel Marin, formerly a member of the Charlotte Latin-alternative quintet La Rúa, will celebrate the world premiere of his feature film, La Casa del Ritmo, A Film About Los Amigos Invisibles, at the Miami International Film Festival in March.

The film shares the musical journey of Los Amigos Invisibles over the last 20 years through conversations with each of the six original band members, as well as David Byrne (Talking Heads)
and Yale Evelev - both formerly of Luaka Bop — and a concert shot in New York City in March of 2011 at the Highline Ballroom. Marin worked on the film with his wife and former CL photographer, Catalina Kulczar-Marin, and Ecuadorian director Javier Andrade.

As a part of La Rúa, Marin toured with Los Amigos Invisibles in 2005 and 2006 and was inspired by the band's hard work, devotion to their music and commitment to their fans. Marin, an Ecuadorian artist/musician who is now based in N.Y.C., had a chance encounter with LAI bass player Jose Rafael Torres in 2010 in which the two discussed the band's 20-year anniversary taking place in 2011.

The Weeknd completes mixtape trifecta

Posted By on Thu, Dec 22, 2011 at 4:15 PM

Ethiopian/Canadian singer The Weeknd — born Abel Tesfaye — released his third mixtape of the year last night, Echoes of Silence. All three albums are available for free at his Website, the-weeknd.com.

The Weeknd is Consequence of Sound's rookie artist of the year for his R&B work and efforts to redefine what it means to be a star in the Internet Age. In addition to his mixtapes, he also received a bunch of writing credit for his work with Drake.

Tesfaye's voice sounds close to Michael Jackson's on the album opener, a cover of the King of Pop's "Dirty Diana." There's some solid original work here though the lyrics get a little too "woe is me" at times. Tesfaye's vocals are the focus of his music, though surrounded by lush electronic soundscapes and rhythms.

It's free — might as well check it out...

Anthony Hamilton Back to Love — Helping to put Charlotte on the map one soul song at a time.

Rammstein Made In Germany — They're big in Germany... but so is David Hasselhoff.

Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa Mac And Devin Go To High School Soundtrack — Since they star in the movie, I guess it makes sense that they're on the soundtrack. Were you expecting Ludacris and 50 Cent instead?

This week's new releases (12/6/2011)

Posted By on Tue, Dec 6, 2011 at 9:04 AM

Here's a quick rundown of what's new in stores this week:

The Black Keys El Camino — Too bad the CD doesn't come with someone to dance like the guy in the video for "Lonely Boy."

Chevelle Hats Off the Bull — When someone says this is an epic album, they probably mean Epic, the band's record label.

Korn The Path of Totality — Apparently nobody told these guys that nu-metal is dead.

The Roots Undun — Smartly done hip-hop from Fallon's house band.

Shakira En Vive Desde Paris — The best way to listen to Shakira is by watching her.

Robin Thicke Love After War — I can't get past the fact that he's the son of Mr. Seaver from Growing Pains.

Amy Winehouse Lioness: Hidden Treasures — Anyone want to guess how many posthumous albums we'll get from the chanteuse?
