Friday is now Wineday

Posted By on Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Would you like some cheese with that wine?

How about some wine with your Friday instead — leaving you nothing to whine about.

ELEVATE Magazine’s Wineday Wednesdays have been moved to Fridays, giving SouthPark the happiest of happy hours to conclude the work week.

The Village at SouthPark (which is essentially the M5 and Cracker Barrel parking lot) transforms into a makeshift vineyard from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. on Fridays.

Why is Oktoberfest in September?

Posted By on Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 3:27 PM

Can someone please explain to me why Oktoberfest is in September?

Is it because October can’t handle Oktoberfest and Halloween, so it had to spread out the holidays?

Whatever the reason, this weekend I was really excited about the fact that I was within walking distance to Memorial Stadium … not only did I not have any gas, but I dared not drive to 10th annual Charlotte Oktoberfest, which was kinda like a tour through Willy Wonka’s factory… or brewery should I say. And getting in was like finding a golden ticket because the event sold out faster than a New Kids on the Block concert when the boy band was in their prime. Speaking of which, they’re coming to the Time Cable Warner Arena Oct.30, and I kinda want to go for some reason.

Oktoberfest was set up like a convention ... with beer. You get a shot-glass-sized beer glass to use for sampling the array of brews at the different brewery booths.

There were 30 breweries from the Carolinas alone, and then 40 breweries from other states, in addition to 39 International brewery booths (most of them from Belgium).

Do the math (cause I suck at it) ... that’s a lot of breweries.

O.A.R. rocks Charlotte

Posted By on Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 10:47 AM

O.A.R. — as in O – A – R, not oar — we’re talking about a band here, not a device for steering your boat! I made that mistake once and totally lost some cool points.

Well, the other night, O.A.R. jammed out at Cricket Arena.

Random fun fact: before the Astrodome was built, Cricket Arena was the largest domed coliseum in the country.

Anyway, it wasn’t a crazy game of poker, but it was a crazy night.

No, it ain't a drag...

Posted By on Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 4:22 PM

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN — that’s the sound you’ll hear at the drag race — at like, 10 million decibels. The volume is so high you can not only hear it, but feel it. The noise revving from the engine literally rattles your body when you’re standing, and vibrates your butt when seated on the bleachers. And it can be heard up to 20 miles away. It’s kinda like an extreme sport where everyone gets to feel a bit of the rush.

Last weekend, I bypassed the Panther’s game where De-Homme beat Da-Bears and went to the drag. (Our boys are looking good this year, are they not?)

Now announcing MTA winners...

The Metrolina Theatre Association (MTA) Awards…better than the VMAs

mtaawards208.jpg

Spirit Square was the place to be last night; a red carpet led to a reception that led to the McGlohon Theatre, which was packed with members of the local theater community honoring and toasting to their craft.

I had the privilege of presenting several awards alongside the Observer’s Paid to Party Sarah Aarthun.

Nikko - now serving models

Posted By on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 4:52 PM

Next week is Charlotte Fashion Week, but there’s fashion every week in Charlotte, thanks to Carolina Fashion TV’s Fashion Wednesdays at Nikko.

Sure, Charlotte isn’t N.Y.C., L.A., or even Miami or Chicago – but we’re just as trendy, fashion forward, cultural… and the G.R.I.T.S (girls raised in the south) are just as hot! Fashion Wednesdays are further evidence of that.

Vida, the Tyra Banks of Charlotte has gone from model to model maker – she is the one behind Carolina Fashion TV.

I arrive to a completely packed Nikko (even the valet was full) and she just handed me the microphone and told me to use it.

I could barely walk, let alone do my little turn on the catwalk, so the first thing I did was introduce the Lotus fashion show and my own fashion – I was wearing Lotus of course… paired with an Ace bandage, which might be the hottest new fall trend.

What are YOU doing?

Posted By on Fri, Sep 5, 2008 at 2:25 PM

BEST OF PARTY!

The next time someone says to me, “There’s nothing to do in Charlotte!” I am going to offer them some cheese with their wine, then ask them what they’re smoking.

Yesterday afternoon at 1 p.m. I couldn’t even get to Kinkos for work because there’s a full-fledged festival going on in a church parking lot on East Boulevard. As in the Yiasou Greek Festival. Meanwhile, last night Nelly performed live on MySpace…from the Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa. There’s almost too much to do in Charlotte…

The Sunset Club is re-opening this weekend!

Posted By on Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 3:56 PM

sunsetclub108.jpg

As you probably noticed, the Sunset Club closed for renovations about the same time Suite opened. Well, they didn’t just renovate the club, they also renovated the ownership. Panther’s player Jason Kyle was bought out by the owners of the mansion where the infamous Lucid Dreams party was held.

I actually went there to visit the set of the photo shoot of the new and improved Sunset Club advertisement that is running in the Loaf as we speak, or type rather. The shoot was more like a party with cameras and a glam squad.

The said photo shoot was arranged to promote the club’s re-opening scheduled for this weekend. They used the actual furniture from the Sunset Club on the shoot and used members as models. In other words, what you see in the ad is what you get.

Slammin' Jam

Posted By on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 3:06 PM

It can be assumed that an event coordinated by “Don’t Hate Productions” is a don’t hate, congregate kind of occasion. As in a non-alcoholic, diverse type of event for which everyone is culturally coexisting and chillin'. Said occasion was Battle Slam Jam at Grayson State Park last Saturday.

The event merged two entirely different cultures by combining two athletic arts – skateboarding and break dancing.
