Editor's note

You may have noticed a few changes to the front section of your Creative Loafing last week. For one thing, the old "Talk of the Town" pages have become "Soul of the City," a name we think better reflects the paper's mission. The Charlotte area in 2005 is not a stuffy, antiquated town, it's a living, breathing, vibrant urban environment with more things to do than you may realize.

Charlotte, like other venerable Southern cities, has a deep soul that connects our region's complicated past with its complex present. We'd like to tap into that soul every week. Which is why we launched the "Urban Explorer" column recently. Its mission is to introduce you to places and things within the city's sprawl that you may not know about. Since its launch, Sam Boykin has taken us everywhere from a rodeo to a controversial strip-club opening. This week, Samantha Gellar leads us on a wild ride with comic book geeks.

CL's cover stories will reflect our renewed commitment to urban exploration, too. In this issue, Jesse DeConto explores the roots of North Carolina's growing Latino culture, which has brought so much color and vitality to our art, music and way of life in Charlotte. His story shows conclusively that Latinos not only have a birthright to broader America, but that Hispanic culture hit the South long before our gringo forefathers dreamed of the sandy Outer Banks or the majestic Appalachian Mountains.

We also changed the name of the music section to "Vibes." With music colliding with so many other frequencies today, we feel it's important to open the lens of popular culture coverage to include videogames, comics, TV, the Internet and other media. Don't worry, though — music will remain the anchor.

You may see more tweaking in the coming months, all to make your Creative Loafing as fun and informative as possible.
