"Ready" For Release 

Hobex preps new album

Chapel Hill's Hobex, whose lead singer Greg Humphreys actually lives in Charlotte now, has signed with Tone-Cool Records. The label, which started out in 1985 signing mostly blues acts, is based in Wellesley Hills, MA, and is also home to the likes of Susan Tedeschi, North Mississippi Allstars and Double Trouble among many others. Last year the band spent a lot of time in the studio recording with former Ben Folds Five bassist Robert Sledge, who engineered and co-produced the material they submitted to the label. The label has set a tentative release date for the record, titled U Ready Man? for October 22. Along with the new record, Tone-Cool will also release the band's Back In The 90s CD. The band will be in town to perform with Gran Torino at the Visulite Theatre on Friday, July 19. For more details, check out www.hobex.com or www.tonecool.com. The ever evolving and sometimes revolving (in their line-up) outfit known as The Recliners are recording a CD which will be comprised of live local performances. Late last month, they began the process by recording a show at the Irish Cue in Cornelius and they'll do so again at the club on July 27 and August 31. They'll also record their August 30 show scheduled for Midtown Harborside on Lake Norman. They hope to release the CD at the end of the year.Parallel recently celebrated the release of their first full-length album titled Staring at the Sun. The band, formerly known as Elixir, recorded the material with producer Rodney Wallace at Gothic Recording in Columbia, SC. Mastering was done by Brent Lambert in Raleigh at Kitchen Mastering. Although drummer Eddie Smith appears on the disc, they have a new drummer, Thomas Duckett, as of recently. The CD is currently available at The Record Exchange and Woody's Music in Rock Hill. Singer-songwriter Rick Spreitzer will be celebrating the release of his new CD on Thursday, July 18, at the Evening Muse. The disc is titled Meanderthal and features 14 original tracks. For the recordings, Spreitzer, who handles vocals, guitar and harmonica, was joined by Mike Strauss (guitar), Steven Carpenter (mandolin), Jill Lurie (backing vocals) and Aaron Brindle (banjo). The Albemarle-based band VooDou will celebrate the release of their debut album on Invisible Records on Friday, July 19, at the Hungry Duck, 607 W. 5th St. The CD is titled The Blessing of Curses and will officially be released by the label on July 23. To help them celebrate the release, Chris Connelly of Ministry fame (and also of Pigface and the Revolting Cocks) will also be appearing at the show. Connelly is the band's label mate and VooDou singer Michelle Walters contributed backing vocals to Connelly's latest release, Private Education. (The label also released Sugarsmack's album Top Loader.) The all-ages show starts at 9pm. For more details, check out www.voodou.org. A new Charlotte band will make their debut next week. On Thursday, July 18, Flamigo featuring Eric Gilstrap (ex-Borghal Rantipole), Laurie Ruroden (ex-Tokyo Machine) and Gary Guthrie (of Leisure McCorkle) will perform at the Double Door Inn along with The Noise.

The Dead Kings have completed a new full-length album titled For All Those Hot Black Chicks. The disc will be released on Scat Boy Records here in the US in August and on Scarey Records (Italy) in Europe. The band will also have a song featured on the upcoming soundtrack for the indie flick, Come Get Some (Fatal Sushi Pictures). Currently, they're planning a tour of the Eastern US. The new release will be titled Always Something There To Destroy Me. Live At Leatherwood's, a bluegrass concert featuring different regional acts presented every Saturday night at Leatherwood's Olde Tyme Opry in Shelby, is now a weekly radio show airing every Tuesday at 12midnight on WSGE-FM 91.7 from Gaston College Radio. The show can also still be heard on WGWG-FM 88.3 from Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs every Friday from 8:30-11:30pm and Saturday beginning at 11pm.
