V.I.P passes to the Transformers Movie Premiere at Mez&EpiCentre Theater up for grabs ...

Posted By on Wed, Jun 24, 2009 at 12:31 PM

OK so, Charlotte is not a big enough market to get an actual, real deal, movie premiere - not even for movies like Leatherheads and Talladega Nights, which were filmed here. But that doesn't mean we can't have our own red carpet gala in our plush new EpiCentre Theater, equipped with a red carpet entrance lined with the Transformer cars - and an after party with Las Vegas' D.J. Five following at Mez. The point is to make our own market bigger so that we're seen as one ... and as with red carpets and celebrities - if you roll it, they will come.

redbrand_june25_sideways11.webp

So why don't you come, cheers with cinematic cocktails!

Transformers comes out in theaters today, but the premiere event is this Friday, June 26 ... and I have V.I.P passes for the 7:10 p.m. showing to the first person that e-mails me at brittney.cason@creativeloafing.com wins ... extra points for anyone that humors me by saying I look like Megan Fox - just so I can pretend. (That was a joke)

Having a bash with White Trash

Posted By on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 5:24 PM

While I was in Nashville for the CMA Music Festival getting proposed to in Paradise Park, a trailer park bar on the Nashville strip (read about it in this week’s CL) – I thought it only appropriate to send Tiffany to a White Trash-themed bash … my poor interns

The White Trash Bash

By Tiffany Handy

A teaspoon of butter, a dash of salt and two half-naked girls … that’s how grits were served this past Saturday at the Nasty Productions White Trash party. The Visulite Theater hosted this Fifth Annual event and there couldn’t have been a more perfect setting … other than an actual trailer park somewhere not even listed on a map, maybe.

white-hammer.webp

On one side of the bar was a pool of grits and on the other was the White Hammer game where the objective was to dangle a hammer from your crotch and try to get a hole in one with the golf ball. You might be a redneck if...

The Tool Academy of Charlotte ... bad boys with bad pick-up lines

Posted By on Mon, Jun 22, 2009 at 3:38 PM

I’ve come to the conclusion that being single these days is like the state of the current economy – but with all these new places opening throughout Charlotte, come new faces.

But it doesn’t really matter where you go – you’re going to meet people there, some of which will be tools trying to nail you with bad pick up lines.

Like these...

One night at Cans, I made the mistake of wearing my Jessica Simpson’s Butterscotch lickable body lotion and a guy just walked up to me and took a bite out of my shoulder and told me I smelled like pancakes and made him hungry.

At the Sunset Club, this guy just threw his arm around my waist and pulled me close to him. Like he was fishing and I was an unsuspecting goldfish or something. I wiggled my way free and he looked shocked, “Do you not know who I am?” he asked.

“Am I supposed to?”

“Be gone,” he told me. “You’ll find out by the end of the night.”

I still have no idea who that guy was, other than a guy with seriously bad game. But I’m sure there are girls out there who fall for that... don’t be that girl, or guy for that matter.

According to the book “The Game” by Neil Strauss, the most successful method of picking up women is to insult them and scrutinize their insecurities. A “neg” will not only get their attention, but possibly them. Because the good guy always finishes last, after all. Why is that ladies?... and how can we make it stop? But sometimes great people pop up in the most unsuspecting places. I met the last guy I dated that didn’t suck while judging a bikini contest at Whisky River.

I used to think that I was flypaper for tools, but I've come to the conclusion that it's only the tools with overinflated egos that use those pick-up lines. But if you're out looking for a tool - look no further, there will be one at Forum on Wednesday night ... as if there weren't enough tools in Charlotte as is, we had one shipped in.

But as for the economy, I have a theory…. if Brittney Spears can make a come back, well, so can the economy.

Take me out to the ballgame ...

Posted By on Fri, Jun 19, 2009 at 5:00 PM

I'll take you out to the ballgame. Well, RockHouse Events will ...

knights-logo1.webp

All aboard the Ragin' Uptown Party Bus to the Knights Stadium for the Charlotte Knights vs. the Louisville Bats, Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds for which I am throwing out the first pitch on June 24. Cost is just $15 and includes lower level reserved ticket to the game, transportation to and from, and beers on the bus. BUT ... I am giving away a ride, as well as a RockHouse Event baseball hat (to get you into the mood).

And for added entertainment you can point and laugh at me while I attempt to successfully get the ball from the plate to the mound without making the catcher dive for a ground ball. Last year, I didn't do as bad as Mariah Carey, Carl Lewis or BaBaBooey ... I did get the ball to the plate, but let's just say that if I were bowling, it would have been a gutter ball.

Special thanks to Wes Wisler for diving to catch the play then play it off as though he never changed his stance, and to my friends at LazyDay for capturing the before and after shots of my missed shot...

A different kind of happy hour

Posted By on Thu, Jun 18, 2009 at 2:15 PM

… a Holistic Healing HAPPY hour. Emphasis on the happy.

My friends all call me a dirty hippie – yes, to my face - but I beg to differ … I’m more like a hygienic hippie. I just prefer holistic medicines over western ones — and not just because the cost of health care is ASStronomical, but because it’s natural and effective in most cases. My primary care physician, Dr. Haas is even a holistic healer.

acupuncture-hapy-hour.webp

Well, I took my hippie ass to Healing Hands Clinic for their Acupuncture Happy Hour.

For a mere $10, I got a 15-minute acupuncture treatment on the “5 points in the ear” and 15-minute massage. Now I have gotten a lot of rub downs in my life … as in massages, and that might just be the best one I’ve ever gotten – even if it was just a quickie … again, I am talking about a massage.

It’s like a sample of Chinese medicine — a buffet of health.

Healing Hands Acupuncture and Herbal Clinic serves their holistic healing happy hour once a month, and each one with a different form of modality treatment from yoga to Reiki to massage. The next one is coming up July 14.

Oh, and Adrienne that works there makes the most amazing dip!

Sarah Before Dark spends a Night at the Museum

Posted By on Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 5:09 PM

Well, technically it was before dark, but there is nightlife at the Mint Museum.

picasso1.webp

When it comes to artwork, I always feel like I’m staring at those magic eye books. It doesn’t matter how far away I stand - I still don’t know what the hell I’m looking for. Yet, like music, art speaks to everyone, no matter our culture and what language we speak. So what better way to bring people together for a cause than with the universal language of art.

This week is the final week of the New Orleans exhibit at the Mint and it's going out with a bang and a bash; the Mint is turning into Bourbon Street (kinda) with “Big Easy on the Lawn” on June 19 from 6 – 9 p.m.

She's gone country: Live review of CMA Music Festival in Nashville

Posted By on Mon, Jun 15, 2009 at 9:31 AM

The Deal

Between The Country Music Association Music Festival in Nashville and Bonnaroo about an hour away in B.F.E., there was a lot of good live music in Tennessee this past weekend.

The Good

Darius Rucker and Kid Rock are now considered country artists. Kid Rock was even the encore act for the concerts Friday night with a line-up including Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Zac Brown Band, Rodney Atkins and Jake Owen. Kid Rock even supplemented Sheryl Crow for Martina McBride. My favorite show was Lady Antebellum … in addition to the 5-year-old who was dancing on the otherwise unoccupied stage earlier at McFaddens.

kid-rock-and-martina.webp

Meanwhile Wynonna Judd had a family reunion on stage with her band-member, her mother. Wynonna arguably has the most soulful voice in country music, though there’s a new minority country singer on the map … well, at least at CMA Fest, and that's Rhonda Towns.

The Bad

It was the Coca-Cola 600 all over again … the concert was put on a rain delay before a drop of rain even hit the ground. They interrupted Reba McEntire during her set to clear the stadium, only to wait over an hour for it to rain on the parade, but pass by as quickly as a parade. The show went on … kinda. Rascal Flatts and Julianne Hough didn’t end up going on, but Hootie did, without his Blowfish. Along with Dierks Bentley, and Brad Paisley who played up until 2 a.m. Julianne Hough will be in Charlotte, however, playing at Whisky River’s one year anniversary party (stop back by on Wednesday for your chance to win a ticket to the concert you can only win tickets to).

And I don’t mean to be mean, but Wynona Judd kinda looked like a villain in Star Trek on stage.

wynona-judd.webp

The Verdict

There is live music everywhere in Nashville. From the stage of LP Stadium to the street corners. There was either live music or karaoke at every bar we went to. There’s even a bar where the bartenders serve you while singing, and a strip club with naked karaoke in Printer’s Alley.

And when did John Rich become the P-Diddy of country music? He even has his own very exclusive and essentially hidden club in downtown Nashville called The Spot where lots of celebrities can be spotted.

From A.M. Mayhem to P.M. Mayhem - Brotha Fred's Adult Skate Party

Posted By on Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Go shorty its yo birthday, we gonna party like its your birthday ... Jacinda!

ASaturday, my girl Jacinda, from Brotha Fred's A.M. Mayhem on 96.1 The Beat, is celebrating her birthday ... and you're invited.

sex-and-the-city-premiere-at-birkdale.webp

Last year for Jacinda’s birthday, all she wanted to do was go rollerskating, but Kate’s closed early and we ended up back-up dancing to karaoke at Murphy’s instead. Well, this year they planned ahead …

Saturday is an adult skate party at Kate’s Skate in Indian Trail starting at 11 p.m.

Beer and wine will be served (good luck remaining vertical) and old school music will be played — the kind of skate party us adults use to have when we were kids ... as if we ever actually grow up! Now we just hire a babysitter so we can go act like kids.

Proceeds of this skate soirée will benefit Cystic Fibrosis.
