Hooligans in the Courtyard

Posted By on Fri, Sep 25, 2009 at 10:39 AM

There's another bar opening to watch football in... and by football I mean soccer!

Courtyard Hooligans in Brevard Court has replaced the baseball bar George Herman's that struck out in the beginning of the summer.

The European Soccer pub had its grand opening last weekend - Saturday for the Arsenal game and Sunday for the Manchester United vs. Manchester City. And the pub was packed for the Carling Cup - and although it is easy to pack such a small pub, still ... it was a Wednesday afternoon. They even have a regular already - William seen here promoting their specials ...

They did some major remodeling transforming the ambiance from a NYC baseball dive to an English pub, and are now utilizing the patio space in Brevard Court.

Well, now we know where we'll be watching the World Cup next summer. Goal!

Salsa ... hold the chips

Posted By on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 11:22 AM

For the record (and on the record): Latorre’s didn’t close… they just relocated, according to manager Adam Corkhill.

Latorre’s is now on the top level of HOM where Play was. And they’re already open … and they remain open until 2:30 a.m. because it’s a nightclub now and no longer a restaurant.

Latorre’s is Charlotte’s original Latin nightclub – and now there are so many of them between Tres Pesos, 1900 Mexican Grille and Tequila Bar, and all the ones up and down Tryon Street. But there’s only one Uptown - Latorre’s. They only serve salsa — without the chips — but it's still just as, if not more, spicy.

Every Friday, they offer free salsa lessons with a professional instructor starting at 9 p.m. And if you're hungry you can go to their sister restaurant to get your food fix … which is currently having a special where you 3 course meal for two people for $59.99.

Checking into Room 112

Posted By on Fri, Sep 11, 2009 at 1:57 PM

"When did that get there?"... That's what I was wondering when I turned the corner of Trade and Tryon and saw a restauraunt and lounge tucked in the corner behind the waterfall. For a second there, I thought it has always been there and I hadn't noticed, kind of like Champions and Cutters. But apparently Room 112 Modern Asian Cuisine and Sushi lounge opened quietly July 1.

Restaurant week (Sept. 18 – 27) might be a good time to check them out.

I wanna be sedated … at the dentist.

Posted By on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 4:38 PM

Though I don’t necessarily enjoy frequenting the dentist like I do, say, a happy hour, I have never missed a cleaning — every time I’ve gone to the dentist in the past 10 years or so, they’ve made me take more X-rays than necessary to jack up my bill, given me a lecture about flossing while polishing my teeth, told me I don’t have any cavities, then gave me a free toothbrush and sent me on my way. But despite the fact they took all those X-rays, they apparently never actually read them ... at least not correctly because last week I stopped by my friend Kelly's new practice and she showed me my X-rays - and even I could see with my naked, non-dental school educated eye, that there was something inside my teeth that shouldn't be ... cavities, lots and lots of cavities.

The silver fillings I got as a child from drinking well water sans fluoride and eating one too many Pixie Stix leaked creating 11, I repeat 11 cavities over the years … So how is it that four other dentists - two in Charlotte, one in New York City and one in Virginia overlooked the cavities hidden under my fillings? I guess Dr. Kelly and Micheal Wilson of SouthEnd Dentistry are just better!

And ... they make going to the dentist like happy hour – literally, there is a happy hour at SouthEnd Dentistry this Friday starting at 6 p.m. They are having an open house (and open bar, as well as a catered buffet) to showcase their new practice — said practice that saved my smile. Located right above the Wine Loft in you guessed it, SouthEnd (hence the name). Thus, you can make a night of it at the Wine Loft, or one of the many new nightlife features in SouthEnd including the Common Market and Dharma Lounge.

Want to be on TV?

Posted By on Tue, Sep 8, 2009 at 10:40 AM

Whereas most people need an agent to get on TV... you just need a beer.

Bud Light is casting for their Tailgate Approved commercial. Who knows, this could be your big break ... beer break at least.

bud light commercial

The casting call (or party rather) is Friday, Sept. 11, at the Bud Light Prowl Party at the EpiCentre Pavilion from 6-9 p.m.

The "audition" will entail a Bud Light Locker Room Challenge for the Ladies and a Skills Competition for the Men. 20 casting candidates (yes, 20 - therefore your odds are pretty good) will qualify and win tickets to the Panthers vs. Eagles game, passes to the Bud Light Tailgate Port-a-Party, and a chance to get shot ... with a camera.

You don't even need a headshot ... just two forms of ID (stating that you're 25 or older).

The commercial will be filmed on Sunday, Sept.13, 2009 at the Bud Light Tailgate on the Corner of Mint and Morehead at 9:30 a.m. and air on the Jumbotron during Panthers games throughout the season.

Say cheese! ... or CHEERS rather.

Shake your Buddha

Posted By on Thu, Sep 3, 2009 at 2:58 PM

Dharma Lounge opened its doors yesterday to friends and family and will open its doors to extended family and acquaintances (as in the public) this weekend.

Dharma is not your typical lounge with a dance floor (and bamboo lined patio) — it is nightlife enlightened, a place of Zen. The kind of place where you can find inner peace … and get drunk (and with Zen green tea liquor even).

Yesterday, a Buddhist Monk blessed the venue … and the giant Buddhist statue above the bar that is blessing the booze, which is incredibly inexpensive might I add.

Not only can you shake your Buddha on the dance floor, but Dharma will offer free yoga classes at 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays , making it the only bar that offers both alcohol and detox. And you can also find peace in the fact that Dharma is non-smoking.

Dharma is located near Apostrophe Lounge — between Pop Life at Apostrophe, Media Night at the Gin Mill, the Common Market always being busy, and Dharma’s opening, South End was more busy and bumping than Uptown.

Happy (hour) Hump Day!

Posted By on Tue, Sep 1, 2009 at 1:44 PM

"Mix at Six" at Ballantyne Village begins tomorrow, not at 6 p.m., but at 5 p.m. (So wouldn't that make it Mix at Five?) ... just saying. The weekly Wednesday night events will be held from Sept. 2 through Oct. 28.

Now just about every borough of Charlotte has their own "alive after five"... I'm just waiting for one in Gastonia.

Simplified, the official best band in Charlotte (voted by you), will be playing tomorrow for the first mixer at sixer (or five, rather). Speaking of Simplifed, they just released their video for Sugar Tree.

The Mix at Six band roster ...

Sept. 2 - Simplified (indie rock)

Sept. 9 - Big Sam (pop rock)

Sept. 16 - Josh Z and Company (contemporary, soft rock)

Sept. 23 - Coconut Groove (classic rock)

Sept. 30 - Simplified (indie rock)

Oct. 7 - Flashback-the Party Band (covers from 60's,70's, 80's)

Oct. 14 - First Call Kings (funk, soul)

Oct. 21 - The Remedy (blues, jazz)

Oct. 28 - Simplified (indie rock)

Another Hump Day Happy Hour is at Chima Brazilian Steakhouse - but this one's for the girls (which means guys should go to meet girls) ...

Asian invasion at the EpiCentre

Posted By on Fri, Aug 28, 2009 at 4:58 PM

Last night, I did my own little new-bar bar-crawl starting at Enso Asian Bistro and Sushi Bar, then migrated down to Town Tavern then all the way down to Luna Lounge. Might I suggest doing the same this weekend so you can check out all the venues that only have one thing in common: they’re brand spanking new.

Let's start with Enso ... because it's a perfect place to start a night out.

While at Enso's premiere party I kept hearing, “This place is going to give Nikko a run for its money.” But Enso doesn't have Joanna there wearing her cowboy hat, boa and banging on her tambourine singing, “Don’t you wish your girlfriend was raw like sushi?”

However, there was a performance, a little more conducive to the culture …

enso-opening-09.webp

Enso successfully managed to go out and find some of the most beautiful Asian women I have ever seen, and employed them … all the better for their naked sushi nights.

I wasn’t able to try any of the sushi as I’m deadly allergic to shellfish and I learned my lesson about eating unmarked food at a catered party after I swelled up like Will Smith in Hitch (I was dead sexy) … which you can read about in my blog for Holidate. But I heard it was good, even better than Nikko, some said.

Enso offers vibe dining, which means ambiance and experience comes with your entrée … not to mention 20 different kinds of sake. Of all the décor, I couldn’t help but notice that of the bathroom. The stalls are all private and lined with mirrors – it almost makes you want to have sex in them, and I will bet you money that someone will.

You can vibe dine (or have sex in the bathroom) until 2 a.m.

Enso opens to the public tonight.

'Saved by the Bell' and killed by the economy

Posted By on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 4:44 PM

I've got good news and I've got bad news ...

Good news first ...

Tonight Dustin Diamond — whom you may better know as Screech Powers from Saved by the Bell — will be taking the stage at Lake Norman Comedy Zone in his quest to prove he's a comedian, not just some child star. Is he? How should I know ... go and see for yourself.

screetch.webp

Now brace yourself for the bad news ...

According to a newsletter from the comedy troupe Robot Johnson, The Nook which just recently opened ... has quietly closed. Man, that sucks. Robot Johnson has not announced which venue they're moving to and stage they'll call home, but they will be at CAST on Sept. 5

The BMG unofficial newsletter: Breaking nightlife news + free shit

Posted By on Tue, Aug 18, 2009 at 3:31 PM

Bar Management Group (BMG) has so much new nightlife news, they need a newsletter. So I am taking the liberty of writing it for them … in order to inform you.

According to Bob Durkin, the president of BMG:

• The grand opening weekend of Enso begins Aug. 27. He also turned down my offer of coming with a cowboy hat, tambourine, and boa singing “don’t you wish your girlfriend was raw like sushi” like Joanna, the owner of Nikko

• Come January a Blackfinn will be opening in Phillips Place

And popping open in February at the EpiCentre is the Bubble Lounge, which is going in next to Revolution. It has a similar concept as that of the old Bubble Room at Hom. Memberships will be required for the Bubble Lounge. And not the 3-day memberships required by the ALE, but real memberships like the Sunset Club. It will essentially be the VIP section of the entire EpiCentre.

And Town Tavern is opening this weekend…

I have 10 tickets to their VIP grand opening Thursday night and 10 for their public grand opening on Friday for you … you know what to do. Just e-mail me. brittney.cason@creativeloafing.com

Also, in other news … I hear they’re enforcing a new law that when a Michael Jackson song comes on at a bar, you have to dance, out of respect — kinda like taking your hat off when the National Anthem is being played. OK, I made that one up.
