THE DEAL: Charlotte trio Bunky Moon — Ron Brendle, Troy Conn, Chris Garges — offers some covers mixed in with originals.
THE GOOD: Without going into the album with any preconceived notions, I pressed play and gave it a listen. The first track sounded a bit like ZZ Top at times, but something closer to Deep Purple. The next track came on, continuing the instrumental theme, and I thought, "Now these guys sound like Frank Zappa — interesting." When the third track started, I immediately recognized David Bowie's "Space Oddity." At that point, I had to pick up the album and give it another look — the album combines a number of cover songs with a few original pieces. They had me at Zappa ... The trio offers its own take on the familiar songs and fits in their own songs right alongside them. "Sleep Talk" is a slow blues rumbler; "Hypermobility" is probably what you'd expect based on the name — frantic, playful and guitar-driven. The 11 songs here clock in at nearly an hour.
THE BAD: Some squeaking on "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Part Two" sounded like there were mice running around my headphones.
THE VERDICT: There's talent in being able to re-imagine familiar tunes, keeping the identity of the original, but still breathing new life into the work. It's not easy to keep people interested in instrumental music for extended periods of time, but the diversity on this album helps keep it interesting.
