CD Review: John Nemeth's Name the Day

The Deal: John Nemeth's soul burns with a blue flame.

The Good: Blues may be his avocation, but at heart, John Nemeth is a soul man. His latest has a vintage Memphis sound, like something Stax Records would have put out in the '60s with Booker T and the MGs backing Otis or Sam and Dave. On "Home in Your Heart," Nemeth's' soaring vocals rival Solomon Burke's classic '60s version. Unlike the grits and grunts of many classic soul men, Nemeth's voice has no rough edges. He just glides along smoothly in the upper registers, spinning sugar coated soul. But his smoothness belies a sharp tongue. "Do You Really Want That Woman" could be dedicated to Tiger Woods and Jesse James. Every time a pretty young thing shows him an ounce of attention, "I really can't control myself/I forget about my home and my health," Nemeth moans. "Do you really want that woman?" the band bellows on each chorus. "Damn straight," Nemeth replies, as the band admonishes him: "don't you know you've got a good girl at home?" A mix of old school R&B and soul, "Tuff Girl" sounds like it was spun right off an Otis session outtake.

The Bad: Nothing to report.

The Verdict: If you weren't there to experience it the first time around, you can wallow in Nemeth's funky soul recreation groove.
