The Deal: Much-hyped 23-year-old pop singer releases debut album.
The Good: Her name seems to be just about everywhere these days – much like her radio-friendly hits "I Kissed a Girl" and "Ur So Gay." Perry ditches the sample-heavy pop for a more straight-forward sound of "Thinking of You," sounding more like Alanis Morissette than Avril Lavigne (there's a difference). There are moments where she gives you hope – "Lost" – only to take it away with the next track. Techno beats, samples – if you're into that and pop music, this disc is for you. "Fingerprints" has hints of Gwen Stefani (not No Doubt).
The Bad: The first question that popped in my head was, "What happened to the Warped Tour?" The annual touring festival best known for presenting music to skate to has gone pop? The album's produced by Butch Walker, but that doesn't mean much in this case. It's cookie-cutter pop ... maybe not as bad as Britney Spears and the typical radio fare, but certainly not ground-breaking.
The Verdict: With her being signed on for the duration of this year's Warped Tour, I expected more of an edge. Don't believe the hype. It's another CD that makes me wonder what's happened to creativity in music. She'll be at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on July 14 with the Vans Warped Tour if you'd like to judge for yourself.
