Comic book reviews

Here's a quick rundown of a few superhero comics I've been reading lately:

Green Arrow and Black Canary No. 7: I wonder if writer Judd Winick knows just how bad of a job he's doing on Green Arrow and Black Canary. This comic got a big marketing push when it debuted, but since the first issue, Winick has turned in one inane script after another. The current storyline went from Amazon kidnapping Green Arrow and replacing him with a shape-changing villain, to magic bullets that steal souls, to gangsters dressed as aliens, to the League of Assassins. I mean, I know this is a comic book, but Winick is making suspension of disbelief close to impossible. And did anyone notice that this comic ends with the same sort of villain reveal as the recently released, Winick-written Titans No. 1? I think he's starting to phone it in, people.

Thor No. 8: It seems like I'm always about to drop this comic -- and that's due to the slow-paced story being unfolded by writer J. Michael Straczynski. Whenever I'm in the process of taking the comic off my must-read list, however, Straczynski delivers another great tale, like the one found in this issue. Sure, the story is slow, but it's satisfying.

The Uncanny X-Men No. 497: Since the massive "Messiah Complex" crossover ended, this book has been meandering aimlessly. Half of this issue continues with the hippie-cult arc -- which is a very silly storyline -- and the other half follows Colossus, Nightcrawler and Wolverine in Russia. Let's hope writer Ed Brubaker can wrap this up quickly and get back to some more substantial stories (or as substantial as you can be in an X-Men comic).

Kick-Ass No. 2: Telling the story of "real-life" superheroes, the concept behind Kick-Ass is really cool -- and the execution is as brutal as it is funny. Pick it up.
