Host Search Continues

Plus, more awards

WBAV-FM is close to announcing its new morning host, although the last few weeks' on-air auditions may not be where the new man/woman will come from. Program director Terri Avery told me "we're close to announcing something in the next week or so." The station had to begin looking for a personality and a new local format quickly when its longtime morning program, the nationally syndicated Tom Joyner Show, jumped ship to rival station WCHH-FM in late January. It had been a morning institution for WBAV listeners and a ratings winner for over a decade, and the move was a shocker. The new host will be joined by news director Beatrice Thompson, and the show will air from 5-10am weekdays.

Awards season continues for Charlotte media outlets. WRCM-FM, 91.9 New Life, is nominated for a Dove Award as top radio station in the large market category. The Dove Awards, which honor gospel music, will be announced April 28th. . .A big award goes to WCNC-TV. It has won the George Foster Peabody award for investigative reports on questionable practices by dentists. . .And, News 14 Carolina has won a regional Edward R. Murrow award for best news website, competing against cable and broadcast operations in five states. News 14's web manager is Jason Darwin.

On a personal note, I want to acknowledge the passing of a friend. He was someone who always listened, offered silent support, and heard all my work tales from the various newsrooms I worked in from Dayton to Cincinnati, and finally, here in Charlotte. In fact, I actually met him in a newsroom. He was visiting my news department in Dayton as a part of the noon news' weekly "Adopt-a Pet" segment. When I went into my office, he was sitting in my chair, seemingly looking at the TV monitors, and patiently waiting. For me, I thought. I took this black cat home, changed his name from "Dion" to Rhody, and he became a part of our family for the next 15 years, until he passed away earlier this week.

Stay tuned.
