Jem And The Tonics Get Warped 

Local acts get in on the action at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre

Jem Crossland & The Hypertonics and Skracht Apple were among the four North Carolina acts selected to play at the Vans Warped Tour at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre last week as part of the Monster Energy/Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands 7. The After Life Kids from Cape Fear and 5-Finger Discount out of Asheville filled the other two slots. Over 3000 acts from the US and Canada entered the competition. Four different acts were chosen to perform at each city the tour stops in. Another part of the contest is currently underway at the Ernie Ball website, too. Fans have until September 3 to vote for their favorite band. The five bands with the most votes win prizes provided by Battle 7 sponsors. A panel of judges will also choose four bands from all Battle 7 entries to play at the Key Club in Hollywood, CA, in front of a room full of industry executives. To vote for one of our locals, go to http://battle.ernieball. com/bb7/. You will have to register to vote, but registering literally takes less than one minute.

The Avett Brothers have been selected to perform on the "WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour" on August 11 in Lexington, KY. "WoodSongs" is an internationally syndicated radio program that is broadcast on over 400 radio stations in 32 countries and features a live, weekly webcast, too. The show has an estimated audience of over 500,000 (woowee! that's a lot of folks!). The Avett's new album, A Carolina Jubilee is also receiving great reviews from publications such as No Depression and Country Standard Time. Fox Charlotte/WCCB-TV will hold auditions for the third American Idol series at their studios on Sunday, August 10, from 8am-4pm. Auditions are open to legal US residents between the ages of 16-24 and all participants must bring valid proof of age and a picture ID. A complete list of rules is available at www.foxcharlotte.tv. The winner selected by Fox Charlotte is guaranteed an audition in front of the show's producers in Atlanta on August 20. CL's own media writer, Shannon Reichley will be one of the judges for the Charlotte competition. Checks or gifts can be sent directly to the CL offices no later than 5pm on Friday. (Fox Charlotte is located at One Television Place, off the Briarcreek Road exit on Independence Blvd., behind the Charlotte Merchandise Mart and Cricket Arena.)

The Charlotte Blues Society Keepin' Carolina Blue 10th anniversary compilation CD is now available. In addition to a couple of tunes from blues legends such as B.B. King and John Lee Hooker, there are plenty of local folks featured on the disc as well. Robin Rogers, Shelia Carlisle, Phil Combs and the late Fred Jackson are among the many acts to have a song included on the release. Copies are available for $10 at the CBS monthly gathering held on the first Sunday of each month at the Double Door Inn or you can go to www.carolinablues.org for more details.

Flojo are currently in the studio working on new material. They're recording at Studio Grey (www.studiogrey.net) with Chris Kincaid. The band has also recently added a new "Discography" page to their website, www.flojo.net. Details on the new album will be posted on the page soon and a live bootleg recording titled Flojo Comes Alive has been made available at the site as well.

Charlotte's nationally acclaimed gospel star Pastor John P.Kee and his group New Life will be performing a 60-minute post game concert at the Charlotte Sting game on Saturday, August 9, at the Charlotte Coliseum. Game time is 4pm and ticket info is available by calling 704-424-9622.

Charlotte-area resident Marty Bumgarner is responsible for landing a show with Leon Russell on August 7 at the Sylvia Theater in York, SC. As the story goes, Bumgarner wanted to do something special for his wife, Dierdra's, 50th birthday and Russell is one of her favorite performers. After countless emails, phone calls and a ton of begging to various parties, Marty got Leon's people to agree to a show if he could find an appropriate venue. Marty then called upon his son, Will, who immediately thought of the Sylvia Theater. With a quick phone call to the folks at Sylvia, the ball was rolling and within 24 hours, the show was set. While Marty is a generous guy and loving husband, he does hope that others will come to the show and help him out a little with the cost (hint..hint...). The show is, of course, open to the public. Winston Salem's Swift has replaced guitarist Mikey Gentle with Taylor Mabe. Mabe's former projects included Ascendancy, View Point, Waiting for Wednesday and Goldstar. For more info on the band or a look at their current tour dates, go to www.swift-band.com.
