Saturday morning might not seem like the best time to throw a dance party, but Kendall Kendrick thinks it's as good a time as any.
An ancestral health and wellness coach and mother of four, Kendrick appreciates the nightlife scene but mostly avoids it. The 38-year-old goes to bed early so she can feel and function better during daylight hours. That being said, Kendrick, who has a passion for dance — she also hosts her own podcast (Born Primal) and blogs (Primal Balance) — misses the after dark atmosphere.
So she's created her own party. Wake 'N Shake, happening on May 16 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., at Chop Shop, will be a morning rave and community gathering with breakfast, yoga, dancing and a live DJ.
"Sleep, as a health coach, is so important to me. Telling people, 'Let's stay up late to go out and dance,' seems kind of ridiculous and hypocritical to what I teach people for their health," says Kendrick.
Wake 'N Shake was inspired by similar events happening in cities like San Francisco and New York.
She stresses that sleep is critical to health and wellness and believes that following circadian rhythm — which places emphasis on environment and using daylight as a time for waking and night as a time for sleeping — can be crucial to restorative zzz's.
The event will feature a Vinyasa yoga class (bring your own mat), from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. that's appropriate for all levels. Audrey Baran will lead the class. She currently teaches at Okra in Plaza Midwood and previously led club-style classes at the now defunct Dharma Lounge.
"Traditionally yoga is practiced just before sunrise, as that is when our mind and body are clearest (before breakfast)," says Baran. "Anytime is a great time to practice, but getting it in early sets a calm and confident tone for the day, preparing the body and mind for whatever lies ahead."
DJ Tober will be spinning indie dance, future beats, house, tropical house and some commercial EDM for the event. "It's more of a health thing than a go out and get crazy and destroy brain cells and your liver type of thing," says Tober, who spins at various locations around town and formerly at Dharma.
Kendrick says the event will offer an alcohol-free atmosphere as well. Giving recovering addicts and those seeking sobriety a safe spot within a dance club environment was another component in her idea to host the event.
Instead of alcohol, juices from Viva Raw and coffee, in addition to pastries from Nova's Bakery, will be available for purchase throughout the morning.
Kendrick is dubbing the event the "pre-party to your weekend." Folks attending are also encouraged to dress in their best rave gear for a chance to win prizes.
"As an ancestral health coach, play is actually another thing that I really push adults to explore in their lives because in our busy lives we have all so much responsibility. We work and we take care of our kids and we do all these things," says Kendrick. "I think dance is one of the most primal ways that you can play and I want people to have that environment where they can play and let go.
