Something Old, Something New

Restaurateurs trying different ventures

* Owner Brent Murphy reopened Providence Sundries, 1522 Providence Road, a Myers Park neighborhood establishment since the 1970s. The building, which also houses Pasta and Provisions, has been given an exterior facelift and Murphy has brightened the inside of Sundries, too. The original Sundries opened in 1933 dispensing prescriptions and root beet floats. The latter are once again found on the menu. Some may remember Murphy when he was chef/co-owner of South City Grille on East Boulevard and chef at Atlantic Beer & Ice downtown, both now defunct. This time he is not in the kitchen. That's the task of Chef Mark Jordan, formerly of Macintosh's. According to Jordan the menu is "bar/pub -- like the old Sundries, but with upgrades to make it more current." On the menu are crab fritters with orange horseradish sauce, wings, nachos, and baked sausage for appetizers; Southern fried chicken or shrimp salad with pickled okra, chow chow, toasted pecans and honey-peppered bacon. Blue Plate Specials at lunch feature chicken fried steak and chicken pot pie; sandwiches include housemade barbecue, wraps, fried bologna, and burgers. Entrees include Dad's Meatloaf, Southern Fried Sampler with popcorn shrimp, catfish, crab fritters, hush puppies and slaw, baby back ribs, baked spaghetti, and shrimp Savannah with sundried tomatoes and pasta. Prices range from $4.75 to $7.50 for apps, sandwiches are $5.25 to $8, and entrees range from $8.75 to $13.50. Sundries also has an extensive beer list, a dozen or so wines from a Mad Dog 20/20 to Dom Perignon, and a kid's menu ($4). Hours are 11am until midnight Sunday through Wednesday, and until 2am Thursday through Saturday. The full menu is available until 10pm, apps until midnight. Providence Sundries plans to open for brunch soon. On that buffet will be Eggs Reno, poached eggs, andouille hash, fried grits, and tasso hollandaise; Groovin' Granola Pancake Surprise; Stragglers Smoked Salmon Asparagus Pie; and a Mount Holly Cristo with smoked ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, griddle fried and served with bourbon maple syrup. Brunch will be $8.50 for adults and $4 for kids. Sundries has a new listening room referred to as the Acoustic Cafe. The venue will host local and regional Americana, blues and jazz musicians. 704-366-4467.

* "I wouldn't dream of changing my logo," said owner and Bergen County, NJ, native Lee Katz of Katz New York. Katz opened the deli in July in the Arboretum Office Park, 8045 Providence Road. His logo includes the New York City skyline with the twin towers. On his very New York deli menu are hot corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, homemade soups, a Reuben, cheese blintzes with fresh fruit and sour cream, smoked fish platters, burgers and dogs, er... franks; sweet noodle pudding, knishes, chopped liver, bagels, and omelets. Meats are from Hebrew National and National Deli. Most sandwiches range from $4.95 to $6.95. New hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11am until 8pm and Sunday 8am until 4pm. Closed Monday. 704-543-4666.

* Adam Kantback, formerly the co-owner of La Bibliotheque, has opened the 300-seat Adam's at Ballantyne, featuring "American/Mediterranean fare with a continental menu including dishes from Italy, France, and Morocco." Chef is Greg Helmandollar. Hours are 11am until 11pm Monday through Saturday and until 10pm on Sunday. The piano bar is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30pm on. Lunch prices range from $8 to $15 and dinner $11 to $25. For more information call 704-248-2500.

* Brenda Bowling, who was Kantback's partner since the early 1990s at the 150-seat La Bibliotheque, 1901 Roxborough Road, is now sole owner. She recently completed a minor sprucing up of the interior and plans to keep Chef Mohammed Bentaleb, who has been in that kitchen for the past nine years. Lunch hours are Tuesday through Friday 11:30am until 2:30pm, and dinner Monday through Saturday 5:30pm until 10:30pm. Lunch prices range from $7 to $12, and dinner entrees range from $19 to $35. 704-365-5000.

* Also new in SouthPark is Zebra Restaurant and Wine Bar, 4521 Sharon Road, owned by Pete Pappas, Lisa Alexander, and Jim Alexander. Monte Rosemond (brother of syndicated columnist/psychologist John Rosemond) is an investor, and some of you may remember him from La Tache and the old Fishmarket. Jim Alexander, also the chef, was at Myers Park Country Club for 10 years and is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, in Hyde Park, NY. He says that his menu is "definitely contemporary French, a marriage between the traditional and the new." In addition to the entree selections on the menu, which range from $17 to $29 for Nova Scotia lobster, Alexander offers a nightly tasting menu featuring six to 12 courses and ranging in price from $49 to $69 per person. Hours for breakfast and lunch are Monday through Friday 7am until 10am and 11:30am until 2pm; and dinner Monday through Saturday 5pm until 10pm, until 11pm on weekends. 704-442-9525.

Where are they now?

* Chef Philip Hewitt, who worked with Pete Pappas for years at the Pine Room at Night, has left for Roanoke to work once again for Jim Body. Hewitt worked for Body when he owned La Bibliotheque. I've heard Body's new restaurant in Roanoke is called The Meeting House. Is it me, or does it seem that this column is in some kind of a time loop?

* A note from Patricia and Thierry Moity, former owners of Patou Bistro, states that they plan to open Caprice Bistro, "a small bistro in downtown Wilmington," by mid-November.

Line Changes

* Changes at Bonterra Restaurant & Wine Bar, 1829 Cleveland Avenue: They are now serving Sunday brunch from 11:30am until 3pm. Entrees range $10 to $13 and salads $4 to $6. Also new is executive chef Chris Swinyard, formerly of Dean & DeLuca. 704-333-9463.

* The gift shop of the Levine Museum of the New South carries some food products from the South and is more than happy to look at locally produced products. For more information, call Bobbie Sue Chewing, 704-333-1887.

* In the organic corner are two grocery store items. First, Cascadian Farm's new Veggie and Chicken Bowls are the first frozen entrees made with certified organic chicken. Their farm products are produced without pesticides, antibiotics, genetically modified organisms, hormones, or harmful chemicals. Check them out at www.cfarm.com. The other is Kamut Pasta which states, "100% Organic - There are 7000 pesticides available in Canada, but not one of these killers is found in Kamut." Thank goodness, eh? Their number is 800-510-1881.
