Three questions for Scott McCannell, owner of Tip Top Daily Market

Snug Harbor team opens market at neighborhood crossroads

Folks who remember the pre-NoDa days might recall a small little market that sat in the middle of the neighborhood on 35th Street. It was called Tip Top, a name that owners — Scott McCannell, Kelly Call, Jason Michel and Derek Ghent — are fond of and decided to resurrect as their own new establishment name. Tip Top Daily Market is located along the borders of Plaza Midwood, East Charlotte and NoDa, in a small shopping strip by Hattie's Tap & Tavern off of The Plaza.

"The name kind of just rolls off your tongue and it's kind of like a neat little homage to old-school NoDa before it was NoDa," say McCannell, one of the four owners who also own Snug Harbor in Plaza Midwood.

The new Tip Top spot — once a thrift store and later a convenient store — opened two months ago and seats around 15 people. Though it's currently only open daily from 12-9 p.m., the quad is considering longer hours in the future. They also plan to add outdoor table seating and a patio outback. But for now, the market's small interior offers a chill vibe, local and regional craft beers and plenty of snacks to choose from.

Creative Loafing: When and why did you decide to open this niche market?

Scott McCannell: It's been in our brains for a couple years, but we just had to find the right spot. It's our first attempt at something like this. A bunch of neighborhoods kind of merge here and we thought it'd be nice to have something here. We also just wanted to do something different because we have Snug Harbor and this way we could do something different without all the late hours. We wanted to supply something that's not really in the neighborhood.

What are some of your top selling items as of now?

It seems like lots of people are coming in here and getting a six pack of beer and some of Queen Charlotte's Pimento Cheese. It's locally-made and it's really tasty. But yeah, mostly people just grab some beers and a snack to take home after a hard days work.

Are you planning to have events?

We're doing wine tastings and we're doing what we call music tastings, a kind of listening party for different albums and new releases. If a local band releases a record, they can come here and have a little listening party so people can listen to it. It's just an idea we came up with and we're going to run with it and see how it goes. The best way to find out about the events is on our Facebook page.
