The dangerous love of lashes

Posted By on Wed, Sep 23, 2009 at 10:55 AM

A headline on MSNBC.com caught my eye this morning, made me blink twice, and now I'm passing it along to you: "In lust for lashes, few bat an eye at odd risks."

I guess the want for thick, fuller lashes is more common than I was aware of. Latisse is a hugely popular eyelash-enhancing treatment. A small bottle costs about $120. It seems Latisse lovers are willing to pay any cost to have luscious lashes ... even if that price includes health risks.

Picture 2

Last week, Latisse made headlines when the FDA sent a warning letter to Allergan stating the promotional materials posted on the product’s Web site were “misleading because they omit and minimize risks associated with Latisse.” Among the risks, the FDA notes, is that the active ingredient can cause hair to grow in other places besides the lash area, cause inflammation of the cornea — and can make lighter-colored eyes turn brown.

...

“I don’t care if my eyes bleed,” one fan recently posted on Twitter. “I use it and love it!”

Here's my solution. Instead of putting your eyeballs at risk or growing hair in places hair need not be growing, why not just use fake lashes? Here's a video on how to apply them. Those buggers can be tricky, but I'd rather struggle with some glue than possibly cause inflammation to my cornea. Eww.

Tips for looking fierce or frightening this Halloween

Posted By on Tue, Sep 22, 2009 at 11:37 AM

A priest, a prostitute, and a leprechaun walk into a bar. No, this isn’t the beginning of a lame joke. It’s Halloween! Pimps, whores, and white trash are welcome. Whether you’re going dancing or laying low this Halloween, why not crank up the costume volume?

Sure, maybe it's a little early to be thinking about Halloween costumes ... heck, it isn't even October yet. But true costume connoisseurs know that to really set yourself apart from the pack, planning has to begin hella early.

The majority of Halloween costumes fall into three categories. Flash back to last year: were you scary, sexy, or silly? According to the National Retailer Federation, 2008’s top 10 adult Halloween costumes were angel, ghost, political figures, Batman, nurse, fairy, cat, vampire, pirate, and witch. Yawn. Cut the crap — since when did Halloween have to be safe and child-friendly?

Product reviews: Dr. Denese New York

Posted By on Fri, Sep 18, 2009 at 10:20 AM

Product Line: Dr. DENESE NEW YORK

Nice to meet you Dr. Denese! I have to say, I was blown away with these three products. Advancements in skin care were ever present, which leads me to believe all of Dr. Denese’s products must be awesome!

prodreviews1

Glow Younger Self Tanner: A Clear Self Tanner … with peptides? Yes. It feels like a serum going on, smooth and silky. The processing smell isn’t too bad at the end of the day, but it’s present. The color is realistic and gradual. As with all self tanners, be careful around your feet. For the first time, I used this self tanner on my face. It provided just a hint of color, which was perfect. The only drawback to it being clear is that you can’t see where you have applied the product — can be tricky if you are a newby to self tanners.

SPF 30 Defense Day Cream: The Day Cream rocks. I love that the tinted moisturizer contains zinc oxide … makes me all giddy inside knowing that I am multi-tasking in one product. The formula is matte, so it’s excellent for summer. Oily skin folks, you can probably use this all year long. It was a bit drying for me, so I had to mix in a moisturizer.

Firming Facial Light Resurfacing Peel: The Resurfacing Peel is amazing. Not only does it smell incredible (and I love the orange color), it provides lasting results. I have become a bit obsessed with this product … counting the days to the next application. It makes your skin super smooth, radiant and firm.
