A classic never fails

Posted By on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 11:52 PM

So many times we are bombarded with never-ending trends that change with every season, that often it is hard to keep up. Not just style-wise but also budget-wise, it can get pricey to keep purchasing new trendy items every time someone on E!, in Vogue or some fashion blogger tells you. That is why it is important to invest in classic pieces. So in the times when you don't remember if the snakeskin printed clutch or the neon colors are in — just grab the bag that will never let you down and you always get compliments on, because a classic never fails.

After looking at this list your fashion heart is going to be desiring these bags. I know mine does. Here are a few tips to be a smart shopper:

  • Don’t go beyond your budget. Do you really want to be paying interest on handbag for a year?
  • If you can’t afford the real deal, don’t buy a fake!
  • Shop at a consignment shop, or vintage store you can trust.
  • If you find a bag on Ebay, do your research make sure that it is real. Every designer has their own type of stitching and signatures that are unique to the real thing.
  • And remember … if it is too good to be true, it probably is.

Here are a few classics that are always loved and quite coveted as well. Now if I can only get my hands on some of these beautiful bags...

Go wide (in the pants, that is)

Posted By on Wed, Feb 23, 2011 at 3:08 PM

Are you tired of trying to get your butt strapped into those skinny jeans? Well, ladies have no fear! It is time to let your inner '70s child out with a pair of wide-leg pants.

I have to say that, though I've loved my skinny jeans and jean leggings (I have hard time using the word, jeggings), I am thrilled that wide-leg pants are back. The truth is, wide-leg jeans are more flattering on different body types than its skinny counterpart. Though the wide-leg is back, my suggestion is, don't get rid of the skinny jean just yet — fashion is a cycle and eventually they will make their way back. So just store them ... that is, unless you've outgrown them (or kept to your New Year's resolution and lost the weight) then that's the only time to chunk.

So get your online shop on and look at these options (for all budgets) or for the sakes of our wallets I hope you kept a pair or two in your drawer (I know I have a wide-leg pair that I will be wearing more often).

EM Original Bluebells ($198)

Emerson Made

I fell in love with these jeans at first glance, if you go to the website you will see a selection of photographs that show off this pant. But ... I can't tell if I love the jeans or that belt more! Somebody please tell me they make this jean in short/petite length.

Pintucked Wide Leg Trouser ($79.50)

Gap

I am a lover of Gap jeans because they have always carried a short version. I am only 5'1" and you can imagine how hard it was in middle and high school when I still was growing to find jeans. So, I have a special place in my heart for them. If you are on the petite side like me here is a link to their petite wide-leg jean options! You are welcome.

Win a free prom dress

Posted By on Tue, Feb 22, 2011 at 10:56 AM

Last weekend I was in the mall, looking for a cocktail dress amidst a sea of formal dresses — sequins, floor-length, satiny, fitted, ball-room, you name it and it was on the racks. Yep. It's officially prom season.

To commemorate the time of year when high schools girls get to doll it up Cinderella-style, local boutique Elle VJ is giving away a prom package, which includes a dress, shoes, jewelry and makeup.

Girls, simply pen a 300 to 500 word essay explaining the importance of self-esteem and self-empowerment — and make sure your grades are on point and you have a 3.0 GPA.

Deadline: 3/31

Winner Announced: 4/8

E-mail entries to: promgiveaway@att.net.

Go nude for the spring

Posted By on Wed, Feb 16, 2011 at 12:13 PM

I know everyone is just aching for spring weather, and the weather this week has been such a tease. Even if it is still February, that doesn't mean it is too early to start thinking about your spring wardrobe.

A must-need shoe for spring and basically a staple for your wardrobe is a nude shoe. Seriously, how often do you see this Christian Louboutin on celebs? And with the arrival of bright colors of corals, orange, and pinks, it is all too necessary.

Here are some fab options to add to your collection of beautiful shoes.

A few picks are from Heels.com (are you aware that Heels.com is based in Charlotte? Well, if you didn't now you do! Always remember to support local.)

Vince Camuto: Milsey 2

Take all of these looks and use them for inspiration for your wardrobe, because everyone needs a nude pump. How you wear it is what matters. Work it girls.

Oh Monday, designer Betsey Johnson showcased her "He Loves Me/He Loves Me Not" fall collection.

The keywords? Patterns and texture. From leopard print and plaid to ruffles and crushed velvet, Betsey Johnson makes sure to include something for everyone. So much so that she includes "real women" in her showcase (check out the blonde).

Who, what and wear at The Grammys

Posted By on Tue, Feb 15, 2011 at 11:48 AM

The questions everyone is always asking after the 53rd annual Grammy Awards show are, who wore what, who looked hot and who did not. I have to say, there was some absolute ridiculousness upon the red carpet and of course some knock-outs.

Let's get to it: who what and wear.

Lady Gaga arrived in a pod

Lady Gaga

Let's just start with Lady Gaga. Yes, it was a shocker for her to show up in an egg to incubate until her birth on stage for her performance. I feel like it was a cheap trick to skip the red carpet ... at the same time, I also thought it was brilliant because everyone wanted to see her emerge upon the performance of her new single "Born this Way." When she finally hatched on stage, her outfit was no different from her dancers, a sort of two-piece raincoat. I think someone put it best when they said she looked like she was wearing a condom.

Nicki Minaj in Givenchy

Nicki Minaj in Givenchy

Nicki. Nicki. Nicki. Did you confuse the Grammys for an upscale Halloween party? Because I don't care if you are wearing Givenchy, you look like you couldn't decide if you wanted to be a leopard or Mrs. Frankenstein. I am all about some leopard print ... I won't lie, that dress had the potential of being fierce. But a literal head (notice the hair) to toe interpretation is just all wrong.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2011: Christian Siriano

Posted By on Fri, Feb 11, 2011 at 2:41 PM

Christian Siriano was one of the first designers to show his goodies today. My fave looks:

Notice the embellishment, the detail pulled off to the side of the body. Angles are exciting, people, and black never dies.

New York Fashion Week Fall 2011: Vena Cava

Posted By on Thu, Feb 10, 2011 at 5:50 PM

Designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock showcased their fall line of Vena Cava today. Here are some of my favorite looks.

vena1

vena2

It's very girl in Paris-esque, isn't it? Note the broad, exposed necklines and high-waisted pants. Especially loving the laced shoes and necklace to pull off the looks.

See more photos from Vena Cava's Fall 2011 collection from NYMag.com's The Cut.
