Odds and ends

Posted By on Mon, May 14, 2007 at 11:39 AM

A few miscellaneous items:

A bill that would make North Carolina a comprehensive sex-ed state may actually make it to a full House vote. Advocates say it would greatly improve the current abstinence-only curriculum that's offered in most counties; opponents say it would lead to more risky behavior among teens.

Last November, Creative Loafing wrote about Summer Lipford's quest to know more about her son's death in Iraq. Lipford's putting together a Memorial Day peace vigil in Statesville to commemorate fallen troops. (Full disclosure: Since the story ran, I've become friends with her and plan to help.) If you'd like to get involved, call her at 704-253-2454 or e-mail statesvillememorial@yahoo.com.

In Raleigh on Thursday? Eat lunch with Newt Gingrich, if you have $50 to spare.

Homicide: By the Numbers

Posted By on Mon, May 14, 2007 at 10:44 AM

Homicide in Charlotte is no equal opportunity offender. Race and sex plays a big part in who will be a victim. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police just released this data on this year's 26 homicide victims so far:

  • Black Males, 14, 53.8%

DVD Delivery

One of the best films of 2006 has just come out on DVD, and Creative Loafing readers have an opportunity to win a free copy of the movie.

The powerful non-fiction feature Deliver Us From Evil is reviewed in the View From The Couch section in this week's CL, but here's an excerpt from that write-up:

"A film with the power to affect even the most jaded of moviegoers, this Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature centers on Oliver O'Grady, a priest who over the course of three decades sexually molested countless children throughout the state of California. In a perfect world, a bullet would have been put in his brain a long time ago; instead, he served seven years in prison and is now leading a peaceful life in Ireland. This is where director Amy Berg (a former CNN journalist) caught up with him, and one of the strengths of the picture is the complete access she had in being able to interview her subject at length."

For a chance to win the DVD of Lionsgate's Deliver Us From Evil (which includes deleted scenes and additional interviews), send an e-mail to matt.brunson@cln.com. Place DELIVER US FROM EVIL in the header line, and include in the body your name, address and phone number. Five winners will be selected at random from all submissions. Deadline to enter is May 30.

For more information on the movie, go to www.deliverusfromevilthemovie.com.

They Can't Be Serious

Posted By on Mon, May 7, 2007 at 3:30 PM

Last month, when Mayor Pat McCrory went up to the state legislature to get more funding for our over-burdened criminal justice system, Sen. Dan Clodfelter, with a straight face, told television reporters that if Charlotte wanted more criminal justice system funding legislators would have to make tough choices between funding schools and funding the courts.

What a crock!

Clodfelter and others have long counted on the fact that the average taxpayer has no idea what legislators spend money on in Raleigh. Here's a small sample of what the House leadership currently plans to spend money on:

  • Drag Racing Hall of Fame Museum: $3 million
  • Blue Ridge Park Parkway 75th anniversary celebration: $100,000
  • Marketing funds for the home furnishings industry: $2.6 million
  • Lake Junaluska Welcome Center funding: $250,000
  • Improved internet connectivity for the Southwestern part of the state: $1.4 million

That's just a bit of the more than $60 million in pork the house has planned. If history is any indicator, the Senate side will put up a list that is just as bad. It's worth remembering the next time you read about how we don't have enough money for education, roads or the criminal justice system. What they really mean is that they don't have it because they spent it on something else.
