'Baby' mama drama

Posted By on Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 11:38 AM

What happens when a senior woman used to doing whatever she wants gets refined to her house due to health?

godzilla.jpg

She becomes a raving control freak, prone to waking at ungodly hours and stomping around the house and barking orders because if she's awake, you should be too! I love my mother dearly, but ... pretty soon, it's going to be me or her.

The love of a soldier

Posted By on Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 10:30 AM

It's 10:30 a.m. and my breath reeks of chocolate already.

As the flower deliveries start arriving, my heart goes out to the deployed soldiers who are serving our country in faraway lands and have to be away from their loved ones. Visit MilitaryBlog to see how some spent their Valentine's Day. And for goodness sake, thank a veteran, will ya?

The Observer said no

Posted By on Thu, Feb 14, 2008 at 10:11 AM

The Charlotte Observer doesn't seem to like us. When we requested to purchase a photo of theirs, this is the response we got:

readers can purchase copies of our staff photos on our website charlotte.com. however, we wouldn't sell a staff photo for publication in creative loafing.

I wonder if it has anything to do with a story we wrote on them?

News Roundup, 2/13/08

Posted By on Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 5:17 PM

President Bush signs stimulus package into law: The package, which the President called a “booster shot” to the U.S. economy, will bring rebates of between $300 and $1,200 to many American households. Critics, however, claim that the rebates won’t provide the economic “boost” expected, since taxpayers are inclined to pay bills or invest the money from their checks rather than spend it. Both Democrats and Republicans in Congress had a hand in crafting the $168 billion dollar package, which will also provide tax breaks to businesses for making certain capital purchases.

N.C. gubernatorial candidates’ stands on the state transit situation: Drawing from candidate interviews and campaign materials, this article details the candidates’ stances on transportation in North Carolina, where recent population growth has put an enormous strain on roads, buses and other transit systems. The candidates, including Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory, give their opinions on where needed funds should be spent and obtained, as well as on how to make the state DOT more efficient and ethical.

State vows to cover rape kit costs: North Carolina legislators today pledged to find ways to pay for medical exams for physical evidence of rape. Patients receiving the tests often have to cover part of the $1,600 cost, and the state currently offers only partial coverage for those who lack health insurance and receive the tests. State Representative Alice Bordsen, the chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee on Justice and Public Safety, has brought the matter to the legislature’s attention.

A look at African-American theater

Posted By on Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 3:49 PM

Hopefully, you're aware that February is Black History Month. Well in honor of the annual celebration, CL decided to present reviews of some new African-American theatrical productions.

Writer Thyrsa Gravely had a chance to see these works at last summer's National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, N.C., but you may be seeing the plays at a stage near you before you know it. Here's a look at one play:

Anti-Valentine's Day gifts

Posted By on Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 3:26 PM

Via Cracked.com, we found a list of V-day gifts that won't be on sale in Wal-Mart on Friday. Mainly because they kinda suck as tokens of love, but rock as tokens of laughter and possibly tokens of tokes. It's the list of Gifts That Won't Get You Laid.

A couple of our favorites?

The Single Shot Garder

Quoted as: "Here's a gift that has some honesty behind it. The garter says, 'Hey baby, I wanna see you in your underwear' and the flask says ,'But you're gonna need to be drunk for this to work.'"

Leave Amy alone

Posted By on Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 12:03 PM

Last year, a young man became wildly famous for his tortured plea to "Leave Britney Alone," on YouTube. He was talking about Britney Spears. I would like to reiterate his words in relation to Amy Winehouse, who is in rehab for a terrible drug habit. Just

a few weeks ago, she was photographed smoking crack, in addition to earlier photos of her walking around, sans shoes, in a cold and rainy London.

Now, she is sprung from rehab in order to perform for the Grammys? As the late Nell Carter would say, "Give me a break." This is the problem with the entertainment industry specifically, and the world in general — when people are hurting, they need to be left alone. Anyone that is familiar with the extremely high caliber of Winehouse's performances knows that this was a terrible one. People do need uplift in their lives, but they also need time to heal and recover.

It is ridiculous that a woman with the level of problems that she is having would be allowed to perform on the Grammys. Perhaps the motivation that she needs to get clean would be to miss out on the most important day of her professional life? Regardless, rehab exists for a reason. Leave Amy alone and let her heal.

Nothing to do in Charlotte? Think again!

Posted By on Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:57 AM

By Charity Frederick

“There’s nothing to do in this city!”

That’s all I hear from my friends who live in the university area. And until recently, I must admit that I agreed with them. I went to school at UNC-Charlotte, and my knowledge of the Charlotte scene only included two areas, The Shoppes at University Place (where Boardwalk Billy’s and the Wine Vault are) and 7th and College streets Uptown.

When I started interning for this paper, I discovered that Charlotte’s nightlife extended far beyond bars and nightclubs and Center City. I found galleries, small theaters and a city alive with cultural brilliance. With a little effort, one can find endless things to do in this urban oasis for little or no money.

My weekly journey started at the Joie Lassiter Gallery with their latest exhibit: In Good Company, with works by Willie Little, Radcliffe Bailey and Etiye Dimma Poulsen. As you walk into the unassuming space, you’re blasted right away with the crisp white walls adorned with the artists’ work. As you tour the space of sculpture and paintings, a story unfolds; you might not be able to guess it at first, but as you look and think, you see it. The story of division, and of the struggle of African-Americans, becomes more and more clear. By the time you have toured the entire gallery, you feel your mind has been awakened.

Grey's Lament

Posted By on Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 11:10 AM

FINALLY! The writers' strike is over after 100 excruciating days. If I had to endure one more week without my Grey's Anatomy fix, I may have had to turn to Lost, the single most perplexing show on television. Do you realize how many times I've wondered

morose-mer_400×2621.jpg
whether Meredith was still killing McDreamy slowly with her "dark and twisted"-ness or whether Cristina found a replacement for Burke that didn't involve being in the OR 24-7 or if George realized he doesn't love Izzie any more than he loved Callie? It almost killed me.

What it's really all about? The Oscars. Academy of Motion Picture, Arts, and Sciences president Sid Ganis told the Associated Press, "I am ecstatic that the 80th Academy Awards presentation can now proceed full steam ahead," without "hesitation or discomfort" for the nominees. Many Hollywood stars wouldn't cross the picket line to participate in the ceremony.

Watercooler talk is saved for the rest of the spring ...
