Alcohol vs. Pot, round two

Posted By on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 10:22 AM

Some readers disagreed with a statement in a recent column which pointed out that pot is less harmful than alcohol. Those folks might want to read more about the large group of college presidents who, on Monday, proposed dialing back the legal drinking age to 18 because of a rash of binge drinking deaths by 18-to-20-year-olds. The Associated Press article on the college presidents' proposal noted that between 300 and 400 people in the US die from alcohol poisoning each year. Consider this a reminder that the number of deaths resulting each year from marijuana poisoning is exactly zero. None. Nil. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Not that it's impossible to die from pot poisoning, you understand; the problem is that, according to researchers in California, someone would have to consume between 20,000 and 40,000 joints in about 15 minutes for death to occur. Death by alcohol? Not nearly as hard to do.
