Curry: 'My heart's still at Davidson.'

Posted By on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 1:30 PM

Last night's loss was a stunner, but Curry realizes it's time to shake it off and look toward the future.

“I haven’t thought about (the decision to enter the NBA draft),” said Curry, who finished with 26 points and nine rebounds in Davidson’s 80-68 loss to Saint Mary’s in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. “I tried to put it off until our season was over."

“I’ll talk to all of the people who are involved (in the decision to go pro) and see what happens,” said Curry, who would likely be selected in the top half of the first round if he made himself eligible for the NBA Draft.

“I don’t have a time limit or anything like that, but my heart’s still at Davidson.”

  • Creative Loafing film editor Matt Brunson (right) in a screen capture from the 1984 CBS miniseries Master of the Game.

Arriving on DVD today is the 1984 miniseries Master of the Game, an adaptation of Sidney Sheldon’s bestselling novel about four generations in the wealthy Blackwell family. Dyan Cannon is the top-billed star in this seven-hour epic, and she dominates the bulk of the show. Yet the earliest portion, set before her character is even born, proves to be the most interesting, tracking the journey of her Scottish father (Ian Charleson) as he encounters promise, then betrayal, then success while searching for diamonds in 1880s South Africa.

Green Revolution Policy 101

Posted By on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 10:27 AM

It's environmental day at the Clog. First, a little-noted action by the Obama administration will have very far-reaching consequences; in the long run, at least as far-reaching as the endless string of SuperColossal Bailouts. With one simple act — the Environmental Protection Agency is set to declare that greenhouse gases are dangerous pollutants — the Obama team will completely change the way the United States deals with global warming. It means, for one, that spewing pollutants into the air will become a lot more costly to businesses and utilities. The result, relying on the free market forces conservatives love to pay lip service to, will be to nudge energy consumption toward alternative, non-polluting sources. That's part of the nuts and bolts of how the green revolution will work. It's getting ready to start.

Poll shows N.C. opposed to ban of same-sex marriage

Posted By on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 3:42 PM

You may not have heard about it, but there are two proposed amendments before the N.C. legislature to ban same-sex marriages. The proposals have been stuck in committee, and after today's newly announced poll results on the subject, that may be where the anti-gay legislation stays.

An Elon University poll released today asked North Carolina adults about their view on same-sex marriage, and the results are unexpectedly good news for progressive forces in the state. When asked whether they would support or oppose an amendment to the North Carolina constitution that would prevent same sex marriages, 50.4 percent of respondents said they were opposed. Support for an amendment stood at 43.3 percent, with the rest undecided or refusing to answer.

Here are more detailed results: Strongly Oppose, 21.2 percent; Oppose, 29.2 percent; Strongly Support, 24.5 percent; Support, 18.8 percent.

So far, media stories have reported the poll results as "stunning" or "unexpectedly liberal," as if the state didn't just go for Obama four months ago while also electing a Democratic woman as governor, and another one as U.S. Senator. That senator, Kay Hagan was, you may remember, accused by her opponent, then-incumbent Liddy Dole, of promoting "San Francisco values," and Hagan still managed to bury Dole.

Looks like times have changed in North Carolina a bit quicker than some people realize, or want to admit. It's about time.

Broadway Light Series announced

Posted By on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 1:59 PM

Check out the press release below, announcing Blumenthal Performing Arts Center's upcoming Broadway Lights Series.

BLUMENTHAL ANNOUNCES BLOCKBUSTER BROADWAY LINEUP FOR 2009-2010

CHARLOTTE, NC – A blockbuster lineup of Broadway’s most popular and critically acclaimed productions will visit the Queen City in 2009/10 as part of the N.C. Blumenthal Performing Arts Center’s Broadway Lights Series.

The Center’s 2009/10 series includes four Tony Award winners for Broadway’s Best Musical, as well as a stunning new show direct from Israel.  Many of the shows coming to Charlotte are among the most popular hits on Broadway today.

“Charlotte theater fans who want to see the best of current or recent hits in New York won’t have to go any further next year than Uptown Charlotte,” said Center President Tom Gabbard.  “Never before have we had four multi-week shows in a single season, twice as many as any previous season.  This is particular good news for the local economy since these multi-week shows have a strong regional draw that generates hotel stays, restaurant visits, shopping and other ancillary spending.  It’s a tribute to our theater fans and their steadfast support of our shows that New York’s best producers are eager to bring their shows to Charlotte.”

A-Rod's free hooker

Posted By on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 1:00 PM

A former Manhattan madam who supplied Eliot Spitzer with hookers also counted Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez as a customer - and found him so charming she dated him herself for free, former employees of the call-girl agency tell the Daily News.

A-Rod wooed ex-madam Kristin Davis with flowers, jewelry, persistence and heated e-mails, according to the sources.

"Throughout the years, there were a number of clients that I befriended and it was not uncommon for them to want the women they can't have whether it be the phone bookers or the madam," Davis said.

"In regard to Alex, all I can say is our paths have definitely crossed personally and professionally."

Hugo Chavez calls Obama an 'Ignoramous'

Posted By on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 11:35 AM

Well, this is a fun game: leaders poking at each other like they're on a playground. Remember when King Juan Carlos of Spain told Chavez to, "shut up," after Chavez called former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a "fascist" in 2007? No? Read about that incident here.

In other news ...

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez said on Sunday his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama was at best an "ignoramus" for saying the socialist leader exported terrorism and obstructed progress in Latin America.

"He goes and accuses me of exporting terrorism: the least I can say is that he's a poor ignoramus; he should read and study a little to understand reality," said Chavez, who heads a group of left-wing Latin American leaders opposed to the U.S. influence in the region.

Chavez said Obama's comments had made him change his mind about sending a new ambassador to Washington, after he withdrew the previous envoy in a dispute last year with the Bush administration in which he also expelled the U.S. ambassador to Venezuela.
