Today, Vermont became the fourth state to legalize gay marriage, and the first to do it by the vote of its legislature. Support for legalizing gay marriage was widespread as the Vermont House of Reps voted 100-49, shortly after the Senate had passed the bill 23-5, overriding the veto of Gov. Jim Douglas. Vermont was also the first state to offer civil unions for same-sex couples, back in 2000.
The legislatures of Maine and New Hampshire are also considering bills to allow same-sex marriages, while 43 states have passed laws outlawing them (although one of those states, Iowa, had their anti-gay-marriage law overturned by the state Supreme Court just four days ago).
Today's vote in Vermont is yet another sign that the homophobic walls are gradually tumbling down, as prejudice against LGBT's is increasingly recognized as, to quote former CL columnist Frye Gaillard, "the cutting edge of bigotry these days."
