We have two events in Charlotte today that would have provided a field day for the late comedian George Carlin. Carlin loved to point out studies showing that the U.S. has more golf courses than any sane nation could ever need, and more homeless people per capita than any advanced nation. His answer to the dichotomy? Build apartments for the homeless on America's less successful golf courses. Hey, makes sense to me. As the city's Emergency Winter Shelter closes for the season today, the folks at Urban Ministry are preparing events to draw attention to the shortage of beds for the homeless in Charlotte. No, it's not a golf tournament. This evening, the Homeless Helping Homeless group is holding a Solidarity Sleep-Out rally at Marshall Park, starting at 7 p.m. People will gather for music, speakers, and food; afterward, everyone who wishes to is welcome to spend the night in the park. The Salvation Army canteen will be open all night, and the whole thing is free. It's a good cause, and the need is only getting greater, with the county's homeless population soaring to 6,000 in the past year. Show up with a friend and make a night of it. Hey, bring along some of the fans from the Quail Hollow golf tournament, they'll love it. Maybe next year, part of the proceeds from the tourney could benefit the city's homeless population.
