As a columnist and blogger, it is my pleasure to report that a columnist and a blogger is in the news today. New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd, who has been running out of ideas for at least a year, has now taken to stealing directly from others' writing. As progressive news site Huffington Post reports, Dowd admits that she used an entire paragraph virtually word-for-word from blogger Josh Marshall, a leading progressive blogger and founder of the Talking Points Memo site. The richest part of the story is that Dowd was the journalist who, in 1987, essentially ended Joe Biden's presidential campaign when she revealed that he had plagiarized a speech by British politician Neil Kinnock. Dowd says her nearly word-for-word appropriation of part of Marshall's blogpost was an "error," that she did not read Marshall's original post, and that she heard the text from a friend who didn't mention having read it in Marshall's blog. As for this blog, I personally pledge to you, dear readers, that I will never use someone else's writing and claim it as my own, even in this confused age which, as I like to say, is the best of times and the worst of times, the age of wisdom, and the age of foolishness.
