Note: We're using the term "gay" here as a shorter substitute for the more inclusive term "LGBT."
Much of the American gay community is mad as hell at the Obama administration and with good reason. Moreover, today's actions by the Prez probably aren't going to help all that much, either. First, promises to get rid of the asinine "Don't ask don't tell" policy for the military have been brushed off. Next, the Department of Justice filed a court brief in support of the Bush-era Defense of Marriage Act, a law that says individual states do not have to recognize same-sex marriages from other states. Bad enough that the DOJ is supporting the law, but the wording of the brief is what added insult to injury, equating same-sex marriage with incest and marriage to underage girls. The howls from the gay community have been long, loud and justified. This afternoon, partly to placate the gay community, Obama will sign a memorandum, ta-da, extending benefits although, significantly, no health insurance to same-sex partners of federal employees. And this helps the overall gay community how? As the head of a New York state gay activist group has already blogged, "Welcome to 1999. How revolutionary of the White House to give benefits to same-sex couples, when two-thirds of conservative Wall Street are already doing it. What an achievement."
