McCaskill to DeMint: 'This is nuts'

Posted By on Mon, Jan 4, 2010 at 5:14 PM

When we reported last week on Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) holding up the nomination of Erroll Southers as head of the Transportation Security Administation — after the underwear bomber incident, no less — because Southers might be in favor of unionizing the TSA, we asked, “How much crazier is the American right wing gonna get before someone starts talking about straitjackets?” Well, it looks like we’re finally getting there. Yesterday on CNN, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo) debated DeMint about the TSA appointment, and in a rare moment of politician directness, told DeMint, “Look, with all due respect, this is nuts,” and went on to explain why.

So DeMint thinks Southers would “bring the security concerns of TSA under the authority of union bosses,” huh? Jesus, what lunacy. As the GOP tilts farther and farther toward the teabagger fringe, their grasping at weird notions of ideological purity to guide them in an uncertain time is, frankly, dangerous as hell to the country. I’ve read that psychologists say most psychotics don’t realize it when they’ve finally flipped. The same, apparently, can be said today of America’s right wing. Here is part of the McCaskill-DeMint tete-a-tete on CNN. McCaskill’s comments come at around the 2-minute mark.
