Official meetings, tweets, and douchebags

Posted By on Wed, Oct 6, 2010 at 4:51 PM

Last night, as you know by now, the County Commission rejected Bill James’ latest attempt to crap on anyone who differs from his archaic views. It doesn’t matter who it is — blacks, gays, immigrants, he doesn’t care — as long as they’re politically weaker than white men in suits, James will gladly bully them. Since James’ original proposal included ordering the county to deliberately break federal law, he had to change it to one that would ask the Dept. of Homeland Security how the county can share its info about undocumented immigrants. His proposal was rejected 5-3, with votes split along party lines.

The demagoguery of the Republican commissioners was striking, although I don’t know why I was surprised, since it’s a GOP tradition to throw raw meat to the knuckle-dragging bigots who comprise half of their corporations-&-bigots base. What was even more striking, however, was the amount of friggin’ tweeting that was going on during a public governmental meeting. I don’t use Twitter, but a friend linked me to tweets from last night. To say that I’m appalled doesn’t start to describe my feelings. These are grownups? This is a government meeting? These are people we’re supposed to take seriously?

Commissioner Karen Bentley showed her respect for our governmental system in America by tweeting, “We should not blindly follow federal law when we understand the devasting impact of illegal immigration on our local government.” OK, first of all, it’s “devastating,” not “devasting,” but hey, people say I’m too picky about spelling, so I’ll let that one go.

Second, what devasting, sorry, devastating impact on our local government? That whopping 3.4 percent of the county’s total welfare, food stamps and Medicaid payments? Yeah, that’s a budget killer, all right. Plus, who cares if babies in Charlotte — American citizens, no less — get sick and need care? Let’s save a buck off their illness; that’ll leave more dough for better snacks at the next County Commission retreat.

Third, what does it say about Bentley, and about the extremism taking over the Republican Party, that an elected county official communicated that the county should not follow federal law?

James, meanwhile, was tweeting away so much during the meeting, one speaker demanded that James quit playing with his toy and look him in the eye. There’s something wrong with James, just as there’s something wrong with anyone who takes such an adolescent delight in being a pain in the ass. What kind of adult, much less a supposedly responsible public servant, sends messages during a meeting, accusing his opponents of being thieves? Or exclaiming “Go Arizona!” as if the immigration issue is merely a political game? Or — and keep in mind, again, this is a county commissioner, during an official meeting, while others are talking — “It's halloween time.... Be scared little Democrats....... Bill James is coming.....”? WTF?! I’m sure those comments seem to funny to the droolers James depends on for support, but the bad news, Bill, is that to everyone else, it kinda makes you look like a douchebag. Oh yeah, that’s right . . . .
