Six months ago, pastor Terry Jones, he of the famous Yosemite Sam-esque facial hair, raised an international stink for his plans to burn a copy of the Koran in Gainesville, Florida. Yesterday, one of Jones pals finished the job for him. Sundays scriptural barbecue in Gainesville was a solemn, high-toned event, attended by sophisticates from all parts of the, er, preachers neighborhood. Pastor Wayne Sapp, with Terry Jones supervising, oversaw a trial of the Koran in a small church. The Muslim holy book was found guilty of "crimes," and then burned. The verdict was apparently not in doubt, as this particular copy of the Koran soaked in big jar of kerosene during the trial. After the verdict was announced, Sapp put the book in a metal tray in the center of the church, then fired it up with a barbecue lighter. The event was open to the general public; 30 people showed up. Jones said it was "a once-in-a-lifetime experience."
