Don't be an American Idiot

Broadway and rock 'n' roll don't always mix, but productions like Rock of Ages, in 2009 (which featured the music of Journey, Whitesnake, Styx and Bon Jovi) and American Idiot, the following year - featuring music from Green Day's album of the same title - are shaking things up a bit. But don't take my word for it - a better choice would be to go see American Idiot, a 2011 Grammy Award winner for "Best Musical Show Album," during one of its five upcoming performances at Belk Theater as part of Blumenthal's Broadway Extras Series.

The story, written by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and director Michael Mayer, follows three longtime friends - each with his own set of baggage - who are being forced to reevaluate their dreams and meaning in life. The rebellion against settling for a suburban lifestyle only intensifies with punk rock and wailing guitars. Rock on! (Oh, but don't expect Green Day to actually be there.) $20 and up. March 8, 8 p.m.; March 9, 2 p.m. & 8 p.m. and March 10, 1:30 p.m. & 7 p.m. Belk Theater, 130 N. Tryon St. 704-372-1000. www.blumenthalarts.org.
