The Pull List (7/24/13): Batman, Superman meet for the first time ... again

For those of you not requiring a vacation after the San Diego onslaught, it's time to hit the stores again and spend a utility bill's worth on new comics. We're going to flip it around this week and tackle the Title You Can't Miss before we get to the new series debuts.

Before they even announced the big news about the Man of Steel sequel featuring a certain Caped Crusader, I knew I wanted to talk about Batman/Superman this week. I would have diagnosed myself with mutant powers for foreseeing the relevance of this new series, written by the always-dependable Greg Pak with art from the [insert superlative] Jae Lee. But director Zack Snyder says a different, much older series - the wonderful The Dark Knight Returns - will serve as at least some inspiration. More on that Friday.

But regardless of that roller coaster of vanity this weekend, I stand by my choice of this week's Title You Can't Miss. Batman/Superman #2 comes out today, and I'm already totally invested in the premise of the book. Sure, it partly feels like yet another rehashed origin story of two superhero greats meeting, but Pak and Lee are doing something special here. Inhumans was my entry point into Lee's moody, gorgeous renderings. Now with a slightly different digital polish, his work continues to bring "wows," "whoas" and the occasional "whoa-whoa-wow." It's best if I keep the details vague here, because you really need to let the book do the talking. This series is going to do some great things.

So now let's look at this week's debuts. Marvel's Hunger #1 spins off of the Age of Ultron series, which has little relationship to the upcoming Avengers film sequel that contains those same three words as its subtitle. Everyone's favorite world devourer (you know, the big purple one with that awesome helmet) will be in attendance. Also look for a new series featuring the Rocketeer from IDW, Lobster Johnson and Mass Effect from Dark Horse, and a Hawkeye annual and Superior Spider-Man Team-Up from Marvel.
