Patrick Cannon to plead guilty to corruption charge

Posted By on Mon, Jun 2, 2014 at 10:19 AM

Patrick Cannon is expected to plead guilty to a federal corruption charge and faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Additionally, documents released Monday reveal the former mayor accepted $70,000 in bribes, more than the amount initially reported, but do not mention new targets. That doesn't necessarily mean others won't be charged.

"This investigation did not end with Patrick Cannon's arrest," U.S. Attorney Anne Tompkins told the Charlotte Observer.

Cannon is accused of soliciting and accepting a series of bribes from a Charlotte businessman, identified as "Businessman #1," whose adult entertainment club was in the path of the Blue Line Extension through north Charlotte.

In January 2013, prosecutors say Cannon pocketed $2,000 from the club's owner to influence zoning, planning and transportation department to make it easier for the night spot to stay in business.

The Usual Suspects seem to be keeping a pretty low profile.

Where is all the outrage from the citizenry?

I absolutely agree that Mayor Canon's actions were immoral and criminal. What I don't understand is how it differs from the Republicans' dealing with Art Pope and the Koch brothers or the Democrats dealing with George Soros.

After all, the US Supreme Court just told us that corporate bribery is free speech.
