Lunch Break (10/28/15): Charlotte Post Foundation hosts Black Lives Matter forum on health disparity

The Charlotte Post Foundation hosted a Black Lives Matter forum last night at Little Rock AME Zion that focused on health disparities among African American communities in Mecklenburg County. Three speakers, including Dr. Donald Jonas with Care Ring (tweet seen below), addressed the crowd of more than 50 people and spoke about stats regarding risk factors for African Americans, how location affects health, the importance of healthy eating and other issues facing the community.

A high-riding truck brought down power lines on North Tryon Street near NoDa this morning, closing the road for much of the morning. A truck driver reportedly snagged the lines with the truck's bed around 31st Street. North Tryon Street was closed for several hours between 30th and 32nd streets. One northbound lane of North Tryon Street was also closed earlier in the morning in the University area due to flooding.

Sources have reported that Deputy Ben Fields will be fired from the Richland County Sheriff's Office following the brutal arrest of a female student at Spring Valley High School. The incident was caught on video by students and circulated around the web, leading to an investigation by the RCSO. Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott will hold a press conference at noon to discuss the investigation, and is expected to announce Fields' firing. No charges will come from the RCSO, but would have to come from state or federal agencies. The FBI is currently investigating the incident, as well. UPDATE (12:15): During the press conference, Lott did announce that Fields has been terminated from the RCSO.

The Kansas City Royals won Game 1 of the World Series early this morning, finally scoring the winning run against the New York Mets on a sacrifice fly in the 14th inning after what was nearly a five-hour game. The game was a strange one, with a rare inside-the-park home run coming off the first pitch to a Royals batter in the first inning, and a power outage by Fox Sports delaying the game right around the halfway mark to the dismay of television audiences across the country. The series continues tonight just after 8 p.m.
