Lunch Break (10/29/15): Rash of shootings in Charlotte area

A man was injured in a shooting in Pineville early this morning. Little information has been released about the shooting beyond that the man was shot on Sabal Point Drive and taken to Carolinas Medical Center. The shooting comes after two people were murdered in Charlotte yesterday. A woman was found dead in her home near Johnson C. Smith University just after noon yesterday. Police found a man driving her car and later charged him with her murder. Later Wednesday evening, a man was shot and killed inside an apartment complex in southeast Charlotte off Independence Boulevard. Police are still looking for a suspect in that killing.

Officials announced this morning that an 11-year-old boy who was hit by a car while waiting for a bus in Chester, South Carolina on Tuesday has passed away. The accident was a hit-and-run and police are interviewing witnesses, they said. Deputies reportedly found a suspect vehicle and have identified a person of interest. The boy was a fifth-grader at Chester Park Center of Literacy through Technology.

Former Charlotte Mayor and current U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx will be in Charlotte today to make a "major transportation funding announcement" at the Amtrak station on North Tryon Street. He's expected to announce a $25 million TIGER grant to go toward a new Gateway station that would act as a hub for Amtrak, commuter trains, buses and a streetcar. The project isn't locked in, however, as it is still unclear where the remaining $125-175 million would come from.

The Miami Heat bested the Charlotte Hornets in both teams' season opener last night, winning 104 - 94 and staving off a late game comeback attempt. Kemba Walker led the Hornets with 19 points. Al Jefferson scored 17, but all of his points came in the first half. The Hornets had gotten a 20-point deficit down to five within the last minute of the game, but a three-pointer from Luol Deng sealed the win for the Heat. Chris Bosh scored 21 points and Dwayne Wade scored 20 in the Heat win.
