News Lunch Break (11/9/15): Newton takes down Packers banner as part of duty to 'protect this house'

A Green Bay Packers fan turned to police yesterday after Panthers quarterback Cam Newton tore down a large banner the man and his family had brought to wave in support of the Packers at Bank of America Stadium yesterday. The man claimed he had paid $500 for the banner, and that he would give the organization 48 hours to make it up to him before "taking further action." When asked about the banner following the game, which the Panthers won to remain undefeated, Newton told reporters that it is his "due diligence to protect this house." 

A suspect has been arrested in the case of a 21-year-old mother who was shot during a home invasion last Tuesday. Police said 23-year-old Reco Dawkins Jr. turned himself in yesterday and has been charged with attempted murder, felony breaking and entering and conspiracy to commit felony breaking and entering. It has been reported that Semantha Bunce, a member of the National Guard who was at home with her newborn baby when Dawkins Jr. and another suspect allegedly kicked her door in, traded gunfire with the suspects. The second suspect has not yet been arrested or identified. 

Officials are looking for a 14-year-old girl who hasn't been seen since leaving her family's subdivision in Monroe on a bicycle on Saturday afternoon. Police said Cheyenne Sides is five feet tall with brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing shorts and a teal top. Sides reportedly wears glasses and has braces. The Monroe Police Department is asking that anyone with information about Sides call them at 704-282-4700. This morning, Cheyenne's father Gary Sides, a member of the Union County Board of Education, wrote in a Facebook post that Cheyenne was brought to Wilkes County by taxi in an attempt to find her grandmother who no longer lives there. 

University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe resigned this morning following a meeting of the school's Board of Curators in response to protests among students and student-athletes regarding multiple incidents of racism on campus over the last 90 days. Student Jonathan Butler began the protests with a hunger strike, calling for the removal of Wolfe on the grounds that the school's leadership has allowed the incidents to go unanswered. Butler was later joined by the entire football team, which stated that players would be suspending all football activities until something was done to address the issue.
