News Lunch Break (12/1/15): Camp Lejeune Marine to serve up to 12 years in killing of transgender Filipino woman

A Camp Lejeune Marine was found guilty this morning (local time) in the 2014 murder of a transgender woman in the Phillipines. Lance Corporal Joseph Pemberton will serve up to 12 years for killing 26-year-old Jennifer Laude. According to officials, Pemberton drowned Laude in a hotel room toilet bowl while strangling her after learning of her gender identity. (TWC News Staff)
A driver near Uptown was reportedly reaching for that ever-important cup of coffee when he crashed into a utility pole this morning, taking down power lines and closing a street during rush hour traffic. Police said the distracted driver struck the pole on Dalton Avenue at 6:30 a.m. The road acts as a cut through between North Tryon and Graham streets. It's unclear how long the road will be closed, but police suggested using West 12th Street as an alternative route. (WBTV Web Staff)

First, developers bought the land the deli and beer shop sits on and made plans for new offices to go there instead, and now the location has been the victim of multiple break-ins. Last night, thieves broke into the building for the second time in three weeks, kicking in the glass door at the entrance. It is unclear what, if anything, was stolen. (WSOC Staff)
Police said a road rage incident led to the second shooting near the UNC Charlotte campus in a matter of days. One person reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries following a shooting at 4 p.m. yesterday on Pavilion Boulevard. Police said the altercation began on nearby Highway 49. The victim reportedly drove himself to CMC-University and the scene was clear when police arrived. They are currently looking for the suspect vehicle, but have not released a description, saying it would jeopardize the case. A man was shot in the chest at University House apartments on Saturday night. (Sarah Hagen, WCNC)
Carter the monkey, known for escaping his Charlotte owner's car in March and biting one of his would-be captors, left Charlotte this morning for a primate sanctuary in Texas.
