News Lunch Break (3/9/15): String of shootings last night leave six injured

CMPD continues to investigate a string of shootings that left six injured throughout Charlotte last night. The first shooting took place just before 5 p.m., when two victims were reportedly injured in a shooting at a gas station near Brookshire Boulevard. Responding officers arrested Sean Rutherford, 17, at the scene on firearm possession charges, though it remains unclear how or if he was involved with the shooting. An hour later police responded to a second shooting at a shopping center on The Plaza, where two people were shot in a parked car. At 8:30 p.m. an east Charlotte man was shot in the leg while walking home from a Milton Road convenience store. At 11 p.m. a fourth shooting occurred on Brooktree Drive. The Carolina Panthers re-signed defensive end Charles Johnson this morning, less than a week after releasing the player with the second-most sacks in franchise history. Johnson reportedly took a pay cut to return to Charlotte, although the fact that he will be opening a restaurant in Charlotte soon probably affected his decision a bit as well. (Fox46 Staff) 

Chad Sevearance-Turner has resigned from his position as president of Charlotte’s LGBT Chamber of Commerce, following backlash over his status as a sex offender. Sevearance-Turner first became the subject of controversy when the N.C. Values Coalition questioned the former president’s involvement with Charlotte’s recently expanded nondiscrimination ordinance — particularly survey results that Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts cited as data collected by the LGBT Chamber. Once the spotlight was on Sevearance-Turner, criticism turned to his history. In 2000, a Spartanburg newspaper reported that, while working as a youth minister at a Gaffney, South Carolina church, Sevearance-Turner was arrested and found guilty of fondling a 15-year old boy while he slept. CMPD officials announced the arrest of a man for the murder of a woman and her unborn child that had gone unsolved for nearly four years. Police charged 26-year-old Darne Brown, who was already in jail on unrelated charges, for the July 2012 murder of Hawa Gabbidon. Following the fatal shooting of Gabbidon in Theresa Elder Park in the University area on July 10,  2012, the medical examiner's office found that she was pregnant, and Brown has been charged with murder and murder of an unborn child.
