Lunch Break (3/14/16): Candidates zero in on Charlotte in lead-up to NC primary

Charlotte and surrounding towns will host a few of the presidential front-runners throughout the day today, as tomorrow's primaries promise to be hotly contested and of import to candidates in both parties. Young supporters and peace-loving protesters visited a foggy Lenoir-Rhyne campus in Hickory this morning for a Donald Trump rally that's been postponed for over an hour. Fog in the area reportedly diverted Trump's flight and, at last check, Trump had not yet arrived at the venue. Bernie Sanders will hold a rally that promises to last much of the afternoon in the University area, as doors open at PNC Pavilion at 1:30 p.m. while Sanders himself doesn't plan to speak until 4:30. Last but not least (depending on who you ask), Hillary Clinton will follow up on her husband's appearance here just a week ago with a speech at the Grady Cole Center scheduled for 9:30 p.m. No matter who your preference, as stated by columnist Erin Tracy-Blackwood in this week's Creative Loafing issue, just vote, dammit. Blue Line construction will cause the closure of multiple roads in the University area during nights in the coming week, starting with the closure of University City Boulevard at North Tryon Street at 10 p.m. tonight and lasting until 6 a.m. tomorrow. Tuesday through Thursday nights, crews will shut down Harris Boulevard at North Tryon Street between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. (Karen Sullivan, Charlotte Observer)

Police are investigating a shooting that left one man injured outside of a newly popular night club on North Tryon Street this morning. Investigators say large crowds have been congregating outside of S&G social club at the North Tryon Square shopping center, and they believe some disagreement or confrontation within this crowd led to the shooting. The victim was shot in the leg and suffered minor injuries. Police have not released the names of any potential suspects or the victim. (Mark Davenport, WBTV)

Interstate 40 near Burlington in Alamance County was shut down for two hours last night following a pileup that involved 134 cars, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. A light rain and bright glare on the road is said to have played a role in the gigantic wreck, while rubbernecking contributed to adding more cars to the crash total. Nobody was killed in the pileup, and just 20 people were reported to have suffered minor injuries. (WSOC Staff)

Police are still investigating the back-to-back robberies of two banks in Harrisburg on Saturday morning by one man. According to the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office, the man robbed a Wells Fargo on N.C. Highway 49 before 11 a.m. and then hit a Fifth Third Bank on the same road 10 minutes later, giving him just enough time to switch clothes. (Fox46 Staff)
