Lunch Break (5/11/16): Officer who killed Walter Scott to face federal civil rights charges

Michael Slager, the North Charleston, South Carolina police officer who made headlines when he was caught on tape fatally shooting motorist Walter Scott in the back in April 2015, now faces federal civil rights charges, according to an indictment unsealed this morning. Slager faces charges for violating Walter Scott's civil rights, obstruction of justice and unlawful use of a weapon during the commission of a crime, on top of the murder charges that were already public. A man was shot in the leg during an early-morning drive-by shooting in west Charlotte this morning. Police said the man was shot on Whistlewood Lane off Tuckaseegee Road at around 4 a.m. He is expected to make a full recovery. There is no description available of the suspect vehicle. (WSOC Staff)

A man allegedly ran over his roommate and then beat him with a baseball bat following a dispute near NoDa early this morning, according to CMPD. The victim was able to recover and hop in his own vehicle to chase his attacker down. Police found the two on Dade Street, off The Plaza, and both were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. (WBTV Web Staff)

State lawmakers have introduced a bill to cancel out the controversial and costly House Bill 2, and it's being called the most comprehensive nondiscrimination bill ever introduced to the North Carolina legislature. The "Equality for All Act" bill would replace HB2 and offer protections for everyone in the state, including transgender people. The bill is not likely to get far in a Republican-led legislature, many members of which have staunchly defended HB2 in the face of the potential loss of billions of dollars in federal funding and corporate spending. The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education has decided to let students carry pepper spray around school with them in light of recent HB2-based fear mongering related to transgender students, with one board member at yesterday's work session reportedly stating that it may be "a pretty valuable tool" for female students who don't know "who may come in." Although there are no reports of any transgender student threatening the safety of any of their fellow students, the board's lawyer did say he is aware of "a few cases" in which students have used pepper spray against teachers.
