Hallelujahs at the Gantt

Posted By on Sun, Aug 12, 2012 at 8:00 AM

The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture continues its Oscar, Spencer and Paul film series — which highlights works of black film pioneers Oscar Micheaux, Spencer Williams and Paul Robeson — with a religious nudge. The 1944 film Go Down Death is the third in Spencer Williams' God-fearing trilogy. The narrative finds a shady juke joint owner (Williams) plotting to frame an innocent preacher (Samuel H. James) with a scandalous photograph.

Why? Because his rowdy barrelhouse is nearly empty and the church around the corner is packed. Looks like residents are abandoning their moonshine for hallelujahs. Subtitled "The Story of Jesus and the Devil," Go Down Death spawned controversy in its heyday due to its silent clips depicting hell by French filmmaker Georges Melies. Free with museum admission ($5-$8). Sun., Aug. 12, 2 p.m. Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture, 551 South Tryon St. 704-547-3700. www.ganttcenter.org.

Final chance to sail

Posted By on Sat, Aug 4, 2012 at 9:00 AM

While most of the Best Picture Oscar winners from the Academy's first decade are clunky vehicles that haven't held up particularly well, one of the exceptions is Mutiny on the Bound, a splendid dramatization of the infamous 18th-century mutiny in which first officer Fletcher Christian (Clark Gable) led a revolt against the tyrannical Captain Bligh (Charles Laughton) on the high seas.

MutinyontheBounty1.jpg

While movies like Titanic, Waterworld and The Abyss resulted in countless articles relating the difficulties of filming on water, this is hardly a modern phenomenon, as witnessed by the legendary stories surrounding this 1935 film's numerous mishaps: on-set skirmishes between actors, an overextended budget (easily recouped upon its successful release), destroyed film stock and sets, and countless injuries (and even one death) among crew members. None of this chaos turns up on screen, though: This is an exciting, perfectly executed production that features Gable at his most magnetic and Laughton at his most commanding. This will be shown as the final entry in the Main Library series Ships Ahoy!!: 8 Classic Seafaring Films. Free admission. Aug. 4, 2 p.m. Wells Fargo Playhouse, 300 E. 7th St.

Ships Ahoy screens Billy Budd

Posted By on Sat, Jul 21, 2012 at 10:30 AM

Fans of nautical adventures will find much to appreciate in this absorbing motion picture — even if it doesn't star Johnny Depp or Orlando Bloom. Adapted from the Herman Melville novel, Billy Budd is a 1962 effort that earned Terence Stamp a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his film debut; he plays the title character, an honest and naive sailor whose genuine goodness raises the hackles of the ship's sadistic master-at-arms (Robert Ryan).

Peter Ustinov (who also directed) co-stars as the vessel's captain, a fundamentally decent man whose dedication to the word of the law leads to disastrous results. This will be shown as part of the Main Library series Ships Ahoy!!: 8 Classic Seafaring Films. July 21, 2 p.m. Free. ImaginOn's Wells Fargo Playhouse, 300 E. 7th St. 704-416-4600.
