Hold the Lifeboat

Posted By on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 8:30 AM

The Main Library film series Ships Ahoy!! 8 Classic Seafaring Films continues with a screening of Alfred Hitchcock's 1944 Lifeboat. There are many reasons to watch this minor WWII classic, but chief among them is the opportunity to catch a rare film appearance by Tallulah Bankhead. A legendary stage star whose movie career never took off, she was handed her meatiest screen role by Hitchcock and didn't let him down. She plays a self-centered writer who finds herself stranded on the title vessel after the ship on which she's traveling gets torpedoed by a German sub.

Among the other passengers are seamen of varying dispositions, a millionaire industrialist, and, most troublesome, the duplicitous captain of the U-Boat that shelled their ship in the first place. Working from a story concocted by no less than John Steinbeck, Hitchcock and his crew insure that the movie never feels constrictive, even though it was all filmed on a single set (a feat he would repeat four years later with Rope). Incidentally, if you're wondering how Hitchcock managed to include his customary cameo when all the action takes place on the ocean, check out the "before" and "after" weight loss ad in a newspaper floating by in the water! Free admission. June 23, 2 p.m. ImaginOn's Wells Fargo Playhouse, 300 E. 7th St. 704-416-4600.

Ships Ahoy!

Posted By on Sat, Jun 16, 2012 at 11:00 AM

It's time again for the Main Library's annual Summer Film Series, and perhaps mindful that many families may not be able to afford a beach vacation that would allow them to see the ocean for themselves - or maybe because 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic - the venue has elected to showcase a nautical theme: Ships Ahoy!! 8 Classic Seafaring Films.

seedo_film2_16.jpg

The series, which will take place for eight consecutive Saturdays throughout the summer, begins with 1958's A Night to Remember, an adaptation of Walter Lord's novel about the Titanic's fateful encounter with that iceberg. Largely considered by film critics and scholars to be the best movie ever made about the disaster (sorry, James Cameron fans), it's certainly the most factual, offering only brief vignettes concerning the passengers while spending most of its time with the officers, and approaching the tragedy from a stance that almost qualifies as docudrama. Free admission. June 16, 2 p.m. ImaginOn's Wells Fargo Playhouse, 300 E. 7th St. - Matt Brunson

Free screening of thought-provoking Gift

Posted By on Fri, Jun 8, 2012 at 2:03 PM

After the murder of her brother, Steve Leone, on Feb. 12, 2003, local Charlottean Therese Bartholomew struggled with the grief of having lost a loved one. The intensity of that experience was penned in Coffee Shop God, an emotional memoir about her sibling's untimely death and restorative justice.

But that still wasn't enough to bring Bartholomew to closure. In her continued efforts to reach that point, she met with her brother's killer, Karl Staton, at the Kershaw Correctional Institution in South Carolina. Her purpose was to learn more about what happened at the scene of the crime (a strip club in Greenville), who Staton really was, why he shot her brother, and if she could forgive him of the life-altering damage he had inflicted on her and her family.

Bartholomew, now a member of Murder Victims' Families for Reconciliation (MVFR), took things a step further by filming the encounter for what resulted in a documentary titled The Final Gift.

The Final Gift screens at 7 p.m. tonight, June 8, at Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte. The event will be facilitated by Melissa Mummert with a special guest appearance by Bartholomew, who served as both director and executive producer on the film . Admission is free. Unitarian Universalist Church of Charlotte, 234 N. Sharon Amity Road. 704-366-8623. www.uuccharlotte.org.
